[Yasmin_discussions] ISEA and Locative Media Art Futures

*A Manifesto for Locative and Pervasive media Art*

* *

*Mark Tuters at ISEA 2011 spoke of the spectrum of media art practice in the
mobile arena as ranging from the personal and local to the relational and
transposable. He acknowledged the fetishisation of the local, but held open
the medium's potential for challenging the exploitative effects of
globalisation on hidden labour by tracking all product components. Site
specific thus becomes 'tracing the elsewhere". For me this data as
power proposition
still fell within the realm radical individualism and so was still inside
the framework of the neo-liberal project.
*

*
*

*Mark Shephard on the same panel spoke of ubiquitous conditions and the new
possibilities for new media détournment 45 years after the Situationists. He
suggested artists should abandon the locative as the dominant frame and add
on the concepts of time and identity to enlarge the artistic possibilities
of the medium. Ludic Being might be the new mode for Situationist media. The
visual examples he juxtaposed were parcours runners in a Russian estate (as
modern examples of détourment) with a clip from Cliff Oakley's dystopian
film The Catalogue where consumer profiling and surveillance meet in grim
harmony.
*

*
*

*I think what we could interpret from this is rather that there are two
domains-the "digital tame" of social media, online consumer culture and even
radical digital arts and the "wild" of critical conditions in the world
where poverty and disempowerment have yet to find a political voice in
pervasive digital art.*

* *

*I believe both speakers are still working within the paradigm that existed
before the demise of the neoliberal economic project and that collective and
focused action through pervasive media art , which has some idea of where it
would like to move the dominant ideas, is an altogether more difficult and
painful proposition, but one where Mark Shephard's extension of the frame
could be the most readily applied and move beyond individual détournment to
something more coherent in terms of ideas and commitment.*

[Yasmin_discussions] Spiral Drawing Sunrise @ ISEA2011 ISTANBUL

Spiral Drawing Sunrise

A stunning and unperceived image of the Istanbul sunrise will be drawn by two Dutch artists Esther Polak and Ivar van Bekkum at the Cumhuriyet Art Gallery/ Maksem in Taksim Square on the early morning of 16 September.

The "Spiral Drawing Sunrise" is a contemporary example of land-art, but now reacting to city environments. During the live performance a delicate robot like solar-machine graphs the rising sun, using sand as its ink. The sand drawing will be made directly on the pavement, and will be an unexpected experience for any by-passser. The process will take a couple of hours depending on available sun light. The drawing will fade away in 1-3 days or minutes when the street cleaners feel they have to sweep it away.

A lasting art-work, in the form of a unique photo print, will be available via the website of the project soon after.

You are cordially invited to visit the performance that will start at sunrise, and continues till noon.

Location: Taksim Square near the entrance to İstiklal Caddesi and in front of The Cumhuriyet Art Gallery

Re: [Yasmin_discussions] FW: art and science agency

Hi all,

I thoguh I would let you know about my panel at Isea- "don't anthropomorphise me...etc" at ISEA. The panel will present papers and discuss social robotics and agencys/autonomy- my paper aims to establish a syncretic approach to agency that focuses on data transfer as the key to analysing autonomy and it's impact on post-biological identity so I hope those of you at ISEA can attend!

All info is on the ISEA website.

Dear Yasminers, I am Houssine SOUSSI from Agadir Morocco and I am your moderator for
this week.

Just a reminder to new members of yasmin, it would

be great if you could send a brief post to the list

introducing yourself and your interests relevant to art

and science in the Mediterranean region.

At the end I want just to remind you that the important event of ESEA 2011
is opening next Wednesday 14 September in Istanbul with the participation of
many Yasminers.

[Yasmin_discussions] your yasmin moderator

Dear Yasminers,

I am taking over from Pau Alsina in Barcelona as your YASMIN
moderator ( Nina Czegledy takes over next week).

I will be going to Ars Electronica next weekend for the Origins
conference- hope to see some YASMINERS there.

We are all approaching the date also for ISEA in Istanbul-
there are many yasminers on the programme.

Finally let me mention that I just spend a month at the
ATEC center at the University of Texas, Dallas.

http://www.utdallas.edu/ah/atec/

Whatch yasmin as ATEC is about to post ads for 8 new faculty positions
from sound design, to history and philosophy of technology, to
digital arts, to image science/visualisation to animation and serious games.
I will post the announcement as soon as it comes out.

Much talk in Texas of "virtual humans ' ( both intelligent virtual agents, but
also how we as humans behave on line)> There is an
upcoming conference on Intelligent Virtual Agents
in Iceland Sept 15-17 September:

http://iva2011.ru.is/

Which deals with:
Intelligent virtual agents (IVAs) are interactive characters that
exhibit human-like
qualities and communicate with humans or with each other using natural human
modalities such as speech and gesture. They are capable of realtime perception,
cognition and action that allows them to participate in dynamic
social environments.

Including a workshop on 'culturally motivated virtual characters'

Interesting to see that the cognitive sciences, neurosciences etc are
beginning to
inject themselves into the research areas.

Anyway= please do submit your announcements to YASMIN ANNOUNCEMENTS-
if your post is not in english please include a couple of sentences in english
so I can figure out whether i should approve the post or not. We dont have
a discussion going on YASMIN discussion list- if anyone would like to propose
a topic and moderate the discussion please contact me at rmalina@alum.mit.edu
