hi all
this is such an interesting and rich discussion, and i only wish i had the time to give so many messages the time and response they deserve. but here, for now, are just a few quick thoughts….
In the art/science relationship there often seems to be the assumption that art is the inferior partner, and should be beholden to the rules of science. So in respect of the question as to whether there is pseudo-science within the art/science ouvre, I would say that there is, and that there is a place for it.
Pseudo-science would share much with the supernatural, in as much as the 'true' science is continually nibbling away at its edges and transmuting it into its own territory. Equally, art includes amongst its many responsibilities that of critiquing, complicating, and generally stirring things up with big sticks. The 'true' science should in no way be exempt from this, if only to serve to aid in the process of achieving a more concrete and communicable sense of what the 'true' science actually is.
Despite the occasional worrying (pre) new age tendencies of Guy Murchie's book 'The Seven Mysteries of Life', he talks eloquently about two horizons; the horizon of knowledge and its effect on the horizon of mystery. Located closely to points along the horizon of mystery is the supernatural. Locations which, as others have pointed out, science has claimed and has demonstrated to be entirely natural. Therefore the horizon of knowledge advances and the horizon of mystery retreats. Maybe this suggests that there will always be a supernatural. Where there exists the unknown we place the supernatural, as in the old maritime maps and their infamous declarations of 'here be dragons'.
Art has the ability to create a sense of the concrete out of just about any fabulous concept that the human mind can dream up. It follows that artistic treatment of the supernatural, within the art/science relationship, can sometimes begin the process of converting dragons into mundane natural phenomena. It can also remind us of the importance that the supernatural has, and that its endless and deep rooted fascination is a part of the human condition.
best regards
andy gracie
