I love Bronac's overheard story. When I lived in Spain in the late '70s, there was only one phone for the whole town. It was governed by a beautiful woman about 38 years old. She and most of her family sat behind a glass panel with a small window. You had to go to town to book a phone call. One day, I asked someone whether she was married and was told that, refusing all offers, she had dedicated her life to town communications. A few years later, the phonebox arrived in town and she was out of a job.
