Hi, all -- I'm enjoying the various perspectives raised by this discussion. Apropos to the mention of a broader spectrum than just visible light, I would draw your attention to a 2008 project in which I invited five artists to collaborate with scientists of the Spitzer Space Telescope, which sees in infra-red. The resulting exhibition, OBSERVE, is documented at http://observeexhibit.org . Among the issues engaged by the project was the notion of light as memory -- a way of thinking about light that has interested me for some time. One can consider a star as a kind of recording studio, enabling our understanding of the Cosmos to emerge from watching light's video replay.
