Re: [Yasmin_discussions] art*science 2017 - The New and History

Dear Yasminers,

I just wanted to touch one more thing (and with it, maybe also contribute
to getting the discussion back on track):

I went over the initial post from which the critique between me and Ken
started (and for which I am somewhat sorry: I should have replied
individually instead of following up on list, sorry about that).

In that message there were a lot of different things beyond the "take
science outside laboratories" which was misinterpreted ( what I intended in
saying was in the direction of science, arts, society and technologies
collaborating, not the "everyone is a scientist" scenario or similar ones;
and this was cleared (I hope) in the following messages).

There were descriptions about ways in which the spaces and contexts of the
city (for example Reggio Calabria and Messina) may enable more explicitly
relational processes for innovation and transformation; how technologies
may relate to these opportunities, with data, visualization and
interconnection; how different models for welfare and solidarity can happen
beyond consumption; how all of these and other things can be preserved,
made accessible, usable, inclusive.

When the polemic started, I did not have a chance to mention notable
projects which support all of these approaches, such as RuralHub (
http://www.ruralhub.it/en/) in which sciences, technologies, arts, design,
and the whole rural society are fully engaged, each with their own methods
and languages, in these kinds of relational processes which bring, on the
one hand, change and, on the other hand, preservation, by dealing with
people's imagination and relations. Transforming, for example, an elderly
person of profuond ancient knowledge, but with serious alcohol problems,
into an university professor who teaches the "Catuozzo". Or the hundreds of
other stories and evidences which could be mentioned (and which are
described through papers, articles and books) about that project.

Or the Farm Cultural Park in Favara, in Sicily (
http://www.farmculturalpark.com/)

Or the Ex-Fadda (http://www.exfadda.it/) in Puglia, where the pre-requisite
for the innovation action is a complete, open, loss of control, taken to
extreme measures (for example, the levels of loss of control and
transgression are such that it is unknown how many copies of the keys to
the Ex-Fadda are there, and who has them).

Or the fact that an entire regional administration (in Puglia) flipped
common approaches upside down, implementing what has been described as a
disruptive experience, in which phenomenons of corruption, lobbied vertical
investments, and the lack of policies for young generations were
dramatically confronted with by creating the Bollenti Spiriti initiative (
http://bollentispiriti.regione.puglia.it/ ) which was an action of extreme
transgression, on behalf of the regional administration, in which the
principal focus was the creation of strong relational contexts, supported
by new technologies and education.

All of these, and the others like them, are – in my opinion and in the ones
of all of the writers, journalists, researchers and politicians that have
expressed in these terms about them – models which could inspire us, our
research and practice to go even further along the directions of
relationality, solidarity, welfare, imagination and transgression, to
describe a mediterranean way. Which is also able, because of its nature, to
bring up a dynamic dialogue between "history" and "new", enabled by
technologies and people's relations, desire and imagination.
