YASMIN-messages Digest 05.03.2008.

I co-run a seminar group at The University of Brighton called "Knowledge Through Practice" interrogating the nature of practice based research that may be of interest to participants in this discussion.

It's an open group so artists, researchers, scientists and members of other Universities are also encouraged to join us. Seminars feature presentations, demonstrations, open-discussion and practical sessions by external and internal speakers. Past speakers include Keith Tyson (Turner Prize winning artist), Barry Barker (Curator and former director of the ICA), Dr Clive Cazeaux (Reader in Aesthetics at
University of Wales Institute, Cardiff) and Professor Paul Brown (artist/researcher). Topics of interest include:
. What does 'Practice-based research' actually mean?
. Is it possible to gain 'new knowledge' through practice-based research?
. What are the issues involved in supervising practice-based research?
. What are the current critical issues for practice-based research?
The group is organised by Anna Dumitriu (School of Arts & Communication), Professor Charlie Hooker (School of Arts & Communication) and Dr. Christopher Pierce (Research Student Division Leader) and we have fortnightly meetings in term time. We also aim to put together a related conference in the future at the University of Brighton.
Seminars normally take place (fortnightly in term time) in room M50 The Centre for Research and Development at the University of Brighton, Grand Parade, Brighton, UK and more details about specific events are featured on our website.  After the seminars we often retire to a local pub to continue discussions, all welcome!
