Dear Yasminers,

We are proud to announce the launch of the program of
Waterwheel World Water Day Symposium 3WDS14:
WATER VIEWS: CARING AND DARING

From 17 to 23 March, 200+ scientists, artists, activists and youth
representing 30 countries from 5 continents will present their latest
work, and interact with audience online and in 18 nodes (physical venues)
in Argentina, Australia, Colombia, France, Germany, Greece, Italy,
Morocco, New Zealand, Poland, USA, Taiwan and Tunisia.

Program http://bit.ly/3WDS14-program
Media Release http://bit.ly/3WDS14-mediarelease

The Symposium promotes exchange between people who are concerned with
water issues - for a better sharing of knowledge,
perspectives and governance - through Waterwheel, an online platform
dedicated to water.
The program composed of 42 sessions, caters for all time zones, and
focuses on art, science and activism. It explores questions about how we
are living, and will continue to live, with water and its contrasts.
Demands for new perceptions and approaches to water management, urban
planning, and cooperation, renewed respect for water as a vital resource
and shared heritage are highlighted through trans-disciplinary approaches.

Discussions between presenters and audience online and onsite will follow
every session. The symposium is free. Everyone is welcome to participate.

To view the Symposium, open your browser with the latest Flash player

Re: [Yasmin_discussions] STEM TO STEAM- CALL for EXAMPLES

I sit on the board of the Armory Center for the Arts in Pasadena, California, which three years ago launched a highly successful art/math program called "Artful Connections with Math" ( http://bit.ly/PLxg6B ). As the name implies, this program uses art as a vehicle to teach math principles and pairs artists with math teachers in the classroom.

Just as important as the direct teaching of STEM/STEAM subjects, I believe, is the employment of art to impassion people and groups of all ages, and to redefine science as an emotional connection to existence. The NSF would be wise to promote art for the poeticization of science as vigorously as they do the actual teaching of science. The emotional dimension may be viewed as a means to attract young people to science not only because they are intellectually wired for it, but also because they are so deeply moved by it. People vote, and science suffers or flourishes because of how they vote -- so the goal should be not just more scientists, but an impassioned public. The latter may be better achieved in an art gallery than in a classroom. The Williamson Gallery at Pasadena's Art Center College of Design has employed such a perspective in a series of exhibitions and artist/scientist collaborations, and is presently organizing REALSPACE which will open in October. Recent exhibi!
tions include PAGES, WORLDS, ENERGY, TOOLS, OBSERVE, In the Dermisphere, and NEURO, among others. Some links are:

Re: [Yasmin_discussions] diversity in transdisciplinary practice

Hello all
If the discussion goes on I would like to join, if you agree.
We had a similar discussion in our french network Internum few days ago
Internum is a network of people woking digital art and culture : www.internum.fr
So we spoke about this cause french ministry of culture asks about gender statistics in this field
an we are saying things that are close the topics that Roger propose.
Diversity can be larger than gender equality.
Diversity into global age is a very interesting way to approach this subject.
Thanks

[Yasmin_discussions] Announcing the launch of the H O M E | Women's Networks

Announcing the launch of the H O M E | Women's Networks site documenting a
two-day workshop around the concepts of "Home" and globalization, with a
focus on contemporary Greece.

http://womensnetworks-athens.info/

This workshop extends gün, a project initiated at ISEA Istanbul 2011. Gün
draws on the Turkish tradition of women's social gatherings called "gün"
(meaning "day" in English). Gün(s) are informal hubs of social networks
where women exchange recipes and skills; share opinions and remedies, and
discuss issues and concerns about their communities. Expanding on this
form, our gün brought together Turkish women working with media and
feminist themes. The result was a book, freely distributed in Turkey and
online and recently taken up by Printed Matter in NYC.

In Athens, participants worked together to create this online publication
as a continuation of feminist exchange.

The workshop "Gün: Women's Networks" included the collaboration of Frown, a
makers space in Athens, the Goethe-Institut Athens, and the curators of
"Home/s", an exhibition of ArtUP! Media art in Bulgaria, Greece and Turkey
held at the Benaki Museum in Athens, in October, 2013.

Onwards!

Dear friends;

I have been invited to blog for National Geographic on freshwater issues
and am very excited to begin to get eco art ideas out in this venue. The
first essay is introduced by Sandra Postel, author of many international
books on water and a Fellow at National Geographic.

This blog was recently posted on Water Currents, and the second one about
the North Fork of the Virgin River, which flows through Zion National Park
will come out sometime soon. If you have the time please go to the site and
write a comment, as this is one way they know that people are reading the
blogs. This will also make it possible for an artistic voice to continue
being heard amongst the policy makers and scientists.

I so appreciate your help with this and wish you all a great new year.
