[Yasmin_discussions] the File Room

Dear Paul,

I get the feeling there is a lot of good information in The File Room,
but it's incredibly hard to look through - one has to click on each link
individually, working methodically through various trees, and it's hard
to get an overview. Strange also that there is no listing by artist, or
that you can't search for "women painters in Africa." I guess it is not
really a database in a contemporary sense.

Do you know of anything online that is more flexible? Several people on
another list have mentioned The File Room to me, but no one has
mentioned anything else.

Thanks - Tamiko

Re: [Yasmin_discussions] names of censored contemporary living visual artists

Tamiko,

I would suggest that the File Room is a good place to look, though many of
the notable cases were entered in the 1990s when it was first put online:

[Yasmin_discussions] names of censored contemporary living visual artists

Dear Yasminers,

I am doing an augmented reality artwork on censored artists, to be shown
at the Manifest.AR uninvited augmented reality intervention at the
Venice Biennial.

As the Venice Biennial is about contemporary visual arts I am focusing
on contemporary, living visual artists.

Of course the most recent, widely publicized example is Ai Weiwei, and
the list can be incredibly long - I will have to make a small selection
of around 10. I am curious to query the Yasmin list for your viewpoint,
and will be querying Faces as well (apologies for cross-posting!)

What would be your "top ten"?

take care, Tamiko

[Yasmin_discussions] PhD models and Art and science research

I am deeply interested in bridging gaps in understanding
between art and science researchers and have followed this interest
in a practice-based PhD research project (approved, 2010, University of
New South
Wales):http://www.antarcticanimation.com/content/thesis/abstract.php

My question was 'How can animation be used to combine scientific data
with subjective responses to Antarctica'. This led me to working
closely with climate change scientists and other artists who are united
in seeking ways to understand and represent environmental forces of
change. I developed methods of inquiry that combine scientific
explanations with gestures and lines that are used in both fields to
describe the same forces. Because I wanted my work to contribute to
the fields of art and science, I composed the thesis (including
how I presented animations and art works) in a way that could be
understood by international experts in those fields. The three examiners
of my thesis were a choreographer, an English language critic
and a climate change scientist.

I now work with scientists at the Climate Change Cluster at the
University of Technology Sydney and will keep Yasmin posted about
new interdisciplinary research programs that we are developing there.

I strongly believe that there is more that connects artists
and scientists than separates us and wholeheartedly encourage more
artists and scientists to collaborate to communicate knowledge of our
most pressing global challenges.

Re: [Yasmin_discussions] to PhD or not to PhD

Our (Edinburgh University / Edinburgh College of Art) practice based model
requires 35,000 words, or thereabouts, and a body of work professionally
presented. There is also a taught component in the first year involving
research methods. We expect practice and theory to develop discursively and
for one not to illustrate or lead the other.

Best

Re: [Yasmin_discussions] to PhD or not to PhD

Hello all,

I am now in the first 6 month's of a PhD program in the School of Design at Swinburne University of Technology in Melbourne. This is not a PhD art practice degree-- but a program that is based on the old research model. That means- my current art work is not part of the requirements- I am analyzing and creating theory from some of my work-- and a lot of other sources. The requirement is a 70,000 to 80,000 word literature review-- plus the research. I would like to know what some programs are requiring in the 'Art practice ' PhD.-- and also wondering what the Science world thinks of the art practice model. So, since there are scientists here- maybe we can have a discussion about this.
