[Yasmin_discussions] ART AND ATOMS: FISSION AND FUSION

Dear YASMINERS

Lots of news: read to the end !!

We are starting tonight the YASMIN ART AND ATOMS discussion that will be
moderated by Guillermo Munoz in Valencia and myself
in Marseille. Patrick McCray, Gabrielle Decamous, Jean Pierre
Dautricourt, and Brandon Ballengee are the invited respondents
but all YASMINERS are invited to join in the discussion.

To avoid email overloads=we will not approve more than
a few posts a day - so if you send in a post be patient
until we approve the posts.

if you are finding email overload from YASMIN you can  follow
the discussions on the YASMIN BLOG

http://yasminlist.blogspot.com/

And you can change your YASMIN subscription mode so you
dont get emails individually but once a day or less.

ART AND ATOMS: FISSION AND FUSION

http://estia.media.uoa.gr/mailman/listinfo/yasmin_discussions

In 2011 we will celebrate the International Year of Chemistry. We plan
to hold a number of YASMIN discussions over the next two years that
adress Artists and Atoms: the ways that artists engage with the
science and technology of atoms. Organic chemistry, with its
connections to living systems and modern biology is often addressed by
artists, but inorganic chemistry and nuclear processes such as fusion
and fission are rarely featured in cultural contexts.

Nuclear Energy,
both fission and fusion, are in the public eye again as our societies
seek to find sustainable and alternative energy sources. In the Haute
Provence, France the new ITER project is being established. ITER is a
joint international research and development project that aims to
demonstrate the technical feasibility of fusion power.
http://www.iter.org/

In this discussion we are interested in discussing the ways in which
the arts and humanities are engaging with nuclear energy, and the
cultural context of nuclear fusion and fission. We include both
peaceful and military uses of nuclear energy, as well as use of
radio-isotopes in medecine and natural radio activity.  We are interested
in historical examples from the 50s and 60s as well as the engagement
of artists, science historians and other researchers today.

Questions that can be discussed include:
1) What are examples of artists projects that engage with nuclear
fission and fusion ?
2) What is a cultural history of nuclear fusion and fission ?
3) How have expressed ideas, sensations or intuitions about atoms and
nuclear   phenomena in their art.
4)What modifications of perception took place in their creative
process?  What sensorial and experiential environments did they
create?
5)What are examples of instrumental languages and systems they developed ?
6)How do artists engage with worlds and pheonemena at very different
scales than every day experience, or with phenomena that have no
counterparts in everyday life or sensory experience.
7) all other questions welcome

Moderators: Roger Malina, Guillermo Munoz

Roger Malina is an astronomer currently running the Observatoire
Astronomique de Marseille Provence, and Executive of  the Leonardo
Publications at MIT Press. He is co chair of

[Yasmin_announcements] Tesla@UCL-- Dr Simon Park: Creative Collaborations with Superorganisms -- 25th June

*Thursday, 25 Jun, 18:00 – 19:00*

Surrey*

*"Creative Collaborations with Superorganisms"*

* *

*University** College London*

*Gower Street**, London, WC1E 6BT***

*Garwood Lecture Theatre, South Wing** *

*(Details how to get there at the bottom of the page)*

*Abstract*

Microorganisms are, and always have been, the dominant form of life on Earth
and as such offer an unprecedented conceptual palette for artists. However,
because of our innate prejudice towards the macroscopic, the sublime and
aesthetic nature of the microbiological world is often overlooked.
Cross-disciplinary projects involving both scientists and artists are
becoming increasingly common and recently the microbe is being recognised as
an important medium for art. In this talk Simon Park will discussing how
collaborations between artists, scientists, and even the microorganisms
themselves, are at last starting to reveal the sublime nature of the
microbial world to a wider audience.

*Biography *

Dr Simon Park is a senior lecturer in the Faculty of Health and Medical
Sciences at the University of Surrey and teaches Bacteriology and Molecular
Biology. His activities, and practice beyond scientific research, are driven
by the misconception that microbiological life is primitive and always
detrimental and his conviction is that collaborations with artists can lead
to powerful concepts through which the true and sublime nature of the
microbial world can be communicated in ways that transcends the usual forums
offered by newspaper headlines and popular science magazines.
**

*How to find the Garwood Lecture Theatre:*

Once you enter the main gate of UCL in Gower Street, you will face the
Portico in the UCL quadrangle courtyard. Please take the right hand side
diagonal and walk to the right corner of the building. You will see the
brass tablet indicating South Wing. Enter the second entrance door at the
South Wing, and you will find the Garwood Lecture Theatre on the first
floor. There will be signs from the entrance that will help you to find the
exact location easily.

You may also consult the UCL maps at:

Subject: Arab Digital Expression Training Workshop
dear yasminers,

Here's an update on the workshop organized May 22 to 26 in Cairo by
the Arab Digital Expression Foundation.

best
Ranwa

The Arab Digital Expression Foundation (ADEF) launched Friday May 22
its 2009 training
of trainers' workshop where 18 young professional Arab artists and
techies aged 20 to 30 from Egypt, Lebanon, Syria, Palestine, Morocco,
Tunisia and Sudan.

The training of trainers' continues until May 26, 2009. The workshop
aims at giving
participants the opportunity to explore and get exposure to digital
techniques in film-making, sound and music, animation and web 2.0 as
well as training skills that enhance their own work.

During the workshop, participants will have the opportunity to explore
and practice open
source software in the different audio-visual media and design with a
focus on the role of this emerging worldwide trend that is proving to
have tremendous empowering impact.

Participants will take part in discussions and exercises in digital
collaboration and
sharing, communication and networking and exploration of the
capacities of the Internet. Discussions over art and open source and
the meaning of mass collaboration in art, the benefits of open source
with elaboration on current experiences and initiatives.

Participants will also have the opportunity to work together and
collaborate in artistic
works of expression of their choice during the workshop.

The collaborative and individual projects produced out of the workshop
will be uploaded on
an online portal (www.arabdigitalexpression.net)
and other collaborative platforms.

In that context, participants will take part in exercises and games to
that develop
soft skills such as presentation and communication skills that help
articulate their work, how to work effectively within a team and how
an experiential approach to any work practice can foster creativity.

Believing in the importance of empowering Arab youth who have artistic
expression
experience, the workshop will work on developing their training and
facilitation skills through experiential learning approaches.

By the end of the workshop, ADEF will select participants to be
trainers in its third
Arab Digital Expression Summer Camp in scheduled July 19 to 31, 2009
in Ismailiya, Egypt.

Dear Monsieur Moo,

If you do not know Christoph Keller's work, you might be interested in
the "projects" section of his Web site:
http://www.christophkeller.com. Of note is his "Cloudbuster" project,
among others.

Best,

i was contacted recently by bronac ferran in england who
told me of a project to restage some 19th century technologies
and am sending her your email

i have not been able to come up with any research meteorologists
yet that could help you on the cloud seeding !!

Hello Yasminers!

My name is Monsieur Moo, i'm a French artist settled down in Marseilles
since last September when i did the first act of a *video art /public
performance* trilogy that i'm working in.
This trilogy is an allegory of climate manipulations and it's direct
consequences. First act called *Naufrage* consisted in recreating a real
shipwreck where 2 casted away persons founded safety in a melting life
raft
totally made out of 7,5 tonnes of ice.
The public, convened for the occasion, testified of the slow-acting but
incontrovertible disappearance of the rafts and it's occupants but also of
the huge device necessary for the launching of the raft, the shooting of
cinematographic team, the 14 security services, etc.
>From the disproportion between the subject and the device became the real
interest and the real purpose of this public performance.
more info : http://www.monsieurmoo.com/naufrage.html
Now, following Chris burden, Gordon-Matta Clark of Pierre Huyghe work's, i
focus my researches on what is behind the scene, developing 2 others acts
taking back the same structure as *Naufrage*.
The second act, named *Paparuda*, will consist in triggering artificially
rains close to Canadian-Quebec and American border. This artistic gesture
will answer to the first cloud seeding campaign leaded by the American
meteorologist Kurt Herbert 60 years ago. In this time of drought the
Canadians complained about the fact that the Americans swiped the
water hold
in the clouds going in the Canadian direction.
With this project i would like to make a cloud seeding campaign whit an
alternative technology consisting in transporting silver iodine (
AgNO3 + KI
) with totally silents meteorologic balloons.
An audience will be convened to assist at the 2 deployed elements :
*subject
* ( the rain ) and *massive device* ( balloons, cinematographic teams,
scientists,etc…).
This project is planed to be  realised between 15th and 25th of September
2009 in the Chicoutimi region (Canadian-Quebec). For this project i
received
support from several partnership but i'm still looking for technical,
scientific and meteorologic consulting.
If you have any suggestion, question or curiosity about this project feel
free to contact me at monsieurmoo@gmail.com

Kind regards,

Monsieur Moo.

Snow's prediction that the gap between the rich and poor would
disappear by the year 2000 was widely off the mark

Flickr/Filipe Moreira

An influential lecture on the cultural significance of science remains
as relevant today as when it was delivered 50 years ago.

Fifty years ago this month C.P. Snow, an eminent British
chemist-turned-novelist, gave a lecture at the University of
Cambridge. He originally intended to emphasise how a lack of access to
science and technology was separating the rich from the poor.

But when he came to deliver it, the lecture's focus had shifted to the
tensions and misunderstandings between scientists and literary
intellectuals. This idea, summarised in Snow's subsequent book, The
Two Cultures, rapidly became both widely known and hotly debated
around the English-speaking world.

And it has remained so ever since. Even though the tensions Snow
identified may have softened since the 1950s — many contemporary
novelists, for example, write knowledgeably about scientific ideas —
they still surface in widespread distrust of scientific thinking.

Meanwhile, the idea that Snow himself considered to be more important
— namely science's role in bridging the gap between the rich and poor
— has been forgotten as the motivating theme behind his lecture.

[Yasmin_announcements] In Particular event @ Dana Centre 7-9pm, June 2

As ever, apologies for X-posting

±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±

An evening of invisibility, intangibility and unexpected properties
as artist Julie Freeman, nanotechnologist Jeremy Ramsden, and Pankaj
Vadgama, discuss the nanocosm and the extraordinary beings that
populate it.

Artists and scientists alike are fascinated by the extraordinary
world of nanotechnology. Join us for a journey through these concepts
with an artist and a scientist, and discuss the value and importance
of such collaborations.

Jeremy Ramsden will discuss the latest advances in nanotechnology
while artist Julie Freeman reveals how collaborating with Jeremy has
influenced her work NanoNovels - graphic artworks and stories
inspired by nanoparticles. Pankaj Vadgama completes the trio as he
describes how nanotechnology is revolutionising medicine.

John Hambley, who brought Julie and Jeremy together, will facilitate
and give an insight into the impact of artist residencies in non-arts
environments.

Is art a good way of enabling scientists to communicate their work?
Or can artistic ambiguity and metaphor compromise the communication
of scientific information?
If we want to separate fact from fiction, where does the truth lie?
Come along and join the discussions.

SPEAKERS:
Julie Freeman is currently artist in residence at the Microsystems &
Nanotechnology Centre, Cranfield University.

Prof Jeremy Ramsden is Chair of Nanotechnology, Cranfield University,
Fellow of the IOM3, Editor-in-chief of the Journal of Biological
Physics and Chemistry, and of Nanotechnology Perceptions.

[Yasmin_announcements] Presentation Monsieur Moo.

Hello Yasminers!

My name is Monsieur Moo, i'm a French artist settled down in Marseilles
since last September when i did the first act of a *video art /public
performance* trilogy that i'm working in.
This trilogy is an allegory of climate manipulations and it's direct
consequences. First act called *Naufrage* consisted in recreating a real
shipwreck where 2 casted away persons founded safety in a melting life raft
totally made out of 7,5 tonnes of ice.
In this time of drought the
Canadians complained about the fact that the Americans swiped the water hold
in the clouds going in the Canadian direction.
With this project i would like to make a cloud seeding campaign whit an
alternative technology consisting in transporting silver iodine ( AgNO3 + KI
) with totally silents meteorologic balloons.
An audience will be convened to assist at the 2 deployed elements : *subject
* ( the rain ) and *massive device* ( balloons, cinematographic teams,
scientists,etc…).
This project is planed to be realised between 15th and 25th of September
2009 in the Chicoutimi region (Canadian-Quebec). For this project i received
support from several partnership but i'm still looking for technical,
scientific and meteorologic consulting.
If you have any suggestion, question or curiosity about this project feel
free to contact me at monsieurmoo@gmail.com

Kind regards,

Monsieur Moo.

PS : the third act of the trilogy is still in gestation and will give more
in latter.

Re: [Yasmin_announcements] YASMIN calendar of events on YASMIN2

Roger,
I actually like Yasmin2 (Yasmin - square) in the sense that it is a
continuation and expansion of the idea of the original Yasmin, which implies
also the pooling of resources with the other networks involved. But I am
open to discussion about YAR / RAY / ARY. RAY would be my preference since
it reads as the word "ray".
I am forwarding this to Ekmel so he will be in the loop.

What would be the best way to organize our communication in developing this
resource. There are two starting-points for doing this: An open discussion
in the forum:
http://yasmin2.ning.com/forum/topics/developing-yasmin2
and a moderated group with its own forum:
http://yasmin2.ning.com/group/roadmap

Admittedly this multiple mode of communication (emails, yasmin list,
discussion forum, roadmap group) is bewildering to me, so I can imagine to
others too. But let's wait for input from other members of the community
before making any changes.

I changed the description of Yasmin2 to something more content-centered: "An
Arts - Science - Technology Network for the Mediterranean region. Developed
by members of YASMIN, AMBER and RAMI"

Further ideas:

What about other content? Blog, pictures, other links or pages? Would
someone add their review on e-MobiLArt or similar events to this page?
Could we have brief (summary) portrait pages of member organizations here,
like YASMIN, RAMI, AMBER?

To: yasmin_discussions@estia.media.uoa.gr

Hello,

At the YASMIN meeting in Thessaloniki (eMobiLArt conference / Biennale) on
May 24, it was proposed that we start a collaborative site on ning to
collect information that brings together the YASMIN, AMBER and RAMI
networks. The new site was opened here:

http://yasmin2.ning.com

Ning is a collaborative tool created by Andreesen (founder of Netscape) and
it permits one to create social networks.

Yasmin2 was started as a tool for members of
YASMIN<http://media.uoa.gr/yasmin>,
AMBER <http://www.a-m-b-e-r.org/index.php?lang=en> and
RAMI<http://rami.lafriche.org/>to develop shared resources, as well as
to discuss possible developments for
cross network collaboration.

Please feel free to join. If you want to participate actively in building
the site, see discussion "Developing
yasmin2<http://yasmin2.ning.com/forum/topics/developing-yasmin2>"
on the forum of the site, or also join "list of
lists<http://yasmin2.ning.com/group/listoflists>"
group to help collect information via RSS or links to other sites.

Re: [Yasmin_announcements] digital aesthetics on twitter

In response to Roger Malina's posting of Frank Dietrich's TeleCulture on
digital aesthetics on Twitter, I send on links to works in progress and
exhibitions at MIT, which the readers may find of interest. Alex
Dragulescu's Data Portraits series use text messaging, web interfaces, and
Twitter postings to extract salient words from an individuals postings to
visualize the topical and temporal patterns into a data portrait of the
author. In one series, each portrait is composed of that individuals
conversations. The portraits pulse with scrolling words.

http://www.sq.ro/lexigraphs1.php
The experimental works broaden the digital aesthetic and, aside from the
commercial and governmental ramifications, have the potential to become a
new vocabulary of art, poetry, dance and architecture. Conceptually and
visually the works are striking.
