[Yasmin_discussions] ISEA2012

Dear Yasminers,

greetings from my very last ISEA2012, Machine
Wilderness night. Due to the rich program - including the
excellent keynotes, panels, artist talks, exhibitions, field
trips, fabulous gala night - my symposium dispatch got
delayed day after day...

At the 18th ISEA symposium, once more we experienced
such a wide variety of events, that it is difficult to select
immediately the most interesting highlights. For me a few
more days are required to re-live, reflect and talk about
ISEA2012.

I thought however to ask Yasminers, who participated
in ISEA2012 - what do they think, what did they like
best or did not like? what did they learn from the
exhibitions, talks, events?

it would be really great to hear and discuss various
ISEA themes, opinions in short the experience of others
from the Yasmin community.

all the best

nina czegledy

[Yasmin_discussions] Announcing new initiatives and closing old ones

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

This newsletter follows the merging of
previous newsletters and other means of
communication. You will receive
communications and information
sporadically. The newsletter will
announce project in early phases of
development to which some of you may
want to take part in or will deem them
suitable for international partnerships,
instead of being a publicity tool of
events already happened.

It will provide information for a series
of exhibitions,research activities,
publications and events that we are
developing or that you could be
interested in and wanted to be involved
in. It will be an occasional
communication, no more than a few times
at year, and its focus will be that of
spear-heading collaborations and
opportunities on a variety of projects,
since their early stages.

You had expressed interest in other
mailing lists and for a better organized
structure I have decided to collate
everything in a new single tool. If you
do not wish to receive any information,
please feel free to unsubscribe and the
system will automatically delete your
email. I would be extremely grateful if
you could avoid marking the emails as
spam.

With this newsletter I wanted to avoid
focusing on the communication of what
has been done, with no opportunities to
collaborate or suggest synergies. This
aims to be exactly the opposite - it
will be a view into what is currently
under development for the year 2013 and
2014, in order to provide an opportunity
for institutional collaborations as well
as personal forms of engagement and
collaborations.

As the world of art, fine art research
and art/curatorial practices becomes
more complex - the intention of this
newsletter is to become a tool to better
co-ordinate and internazionalize fine
art outputs and opportunities.

If you happen to be at the Zero1
Biennial in San Jose, we are announcing
there the special issue on Augmented
Reality Art. This special issue is a
collaboration between Kasa Gallery
(Sabanci University) and Samek Art
Gallery (Bucknell University) -
editorship and curatorship by Lanfranco
Aceti and Richard Rinehart. Where:
California Theatre Courtyard, 345 South
First Street, San Jose, CA 95113. When:
September 14th at 6:30pm.

With kind regards,

Lanfranco Aceti

ISEA2011 Istanbul Catalog: Uncontainable
Ozden and I are collating and completing
the catalog which is available on LEA as
single PDFs. The single PDFs will be
transformed in a single volume available
as a physical print issue on Amazon.
They will also be kept online as PDFs in
order to allow the maximum international
distribution and dissemination.
Link:

ISEA2011 Istanbul Proceedings
The proceedings will follow - shortly
after the catalog. Currently the edited
papers (a first edited version of them
in html) are available at this link:
http://isea2011.sabanciuniv.edu/paper-list
. They are being transferred into single
PDFs and will be placed on the Leonardo
Electronic Almanac, as it has been done
for the catalog. From there they will be
collated in a physical print issue
available on Amazon. Although all papers
are available on the ISEA2011 website,
only selected papers will be published
in this printed edition of the Leonardo
Electronic Almanac.

LEA 2012 - 2013
2012 will see a series of publications
from the Leonardo Electronic Almanac
(LEA) in collaboration with
international institutions: Kasa Galeri
in Istanbul, Sabanci University,
Goldsmiths College, The Thursday Club,
Chelsea College, Camberwell College,
Wimbledon College, FACT, Ohio State
University, the Royal College, The
Courtauld, and many others. If you are
interested in submitting papers check
the different calls:
http://www.leoalmanac.org/category/calls/calls-for-papers/
Also in 2013 the LEA submission system
should be automated thanks to Leonardo
and MIT Press - this will facilitate
communication with the authors and
reviewing.

Exhibition and curatorial opportunities
We have set up the LEA Digital Media
Platform - a curatorial partnership with
Christiane Paul and Vince Dziekan. This
curatorial partnership allows exhibits
across a variety of digital media
platforms, from Facebook to Flickr, and
generates collaborations with
international institutions in order to
create new curatorial approaches that
are transfered from the online world to
physical spaces across the world. We are
currently working on an exhibition of
Algorithmic and Generative Art which
coincides with a LEA call for paper
http://www.leoalmanac.org/generative-algorithmic-art-lea-call-for-papers/
and on another exhibition titled Red Art
that coincides with another LEA special
issue
http://www.leoalmanac.org/red-art-lea-call-for-papers/
.

Personal Artistic Practice
This year I have exhibited three
different projects during the AND
(Abandon Normal Devices) Festival in
Manchester. Titled: A Dream Came
Through , The Museum of Contemporary
Cuts and National Panties . They were
part of the exhibition: What Have I Done
To (De)serve This?, curated by Omar
Kholeif and Sarah Perks, hosted by
Cornerhouse and Blankspace.

[Yasmin_discussions] Race and Ethnicity Issues in Science/Engineering Collaboration with Arts/Design/Humanities

Yasminers

We have just approved an abstract for a SEAD White Paper

http://seadnetwork.wordpress.com/white-paper-abstracts/abstracts/

Addressing how in the USA science and engineering programs to attract

young people into science and engineering what are called "under-represented'

groups in the usa.

http://malina.diatrope.com/2012/09/15/important-principles-involved-in-considering-race-and-ethnicity-in-stem-outreach/

Of course the majority of the planet is not male and anglo saxon !!!! but in

many countries there are problems on how to encourage young people

of all backgrounds to enter careers in science and engineering. There are

strong societal biases built into our educational systems.

Important Principles Involved in Considering Race and Ethnicity in STEM outreach

Check out for details:

[Yasmin_discussions] Call for pioneers in collaboration between science/engineering and arts/design and humanities

yasminers

Bronac Ferran is coordinating a SEAD white paper

http://seadnetwork.wordpress.com/white-paper-abstracts/abstracts/

looking at lessons learned by pioneers
in collaboration between science/engineering and arts/design/collaboration.

If you are such a pioneer- active in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s and would like
to have your thoughts included in this white paper please contact
Bronac directly
or contact me at rmalina(at)alum.mit.edu

SEAD: TO SUCCESS AND SUCCESSION. DRAWING ON PIONEERING WORKS
AND FORMING A NEW INFRASTRUCTURE

Coordinator: Bronac Ferran

Amnesia can dominate when it comes to building new forms of support
for art/science/technology research and practice. Despite practical
experiments and theoretical analysis stretching back for more than a
century, there is often a 'year zero' assumption – a sense of building
something entirely new. Structures and systems of support tend to come
and go with few if any signs of critical accumulation. This White
Paper will reference the lineage behind highly contemporary practices
and argue that accessing the critical wisdom of earlier pioneers
across arts and science borders is an important part of strengthening
the seemingly new. Often these pioneers have had migratory careers,
moving between institutions or even countries, which has contributed
to a sense of dispersal of knowledge and a lack of integration into
formal structures. We should explore some of the challenges involved
with drawing together distributed viewpoints, disparate processes and
(often) contrasting ideologies. We need to observe a continuum of
'praxis' alongside the joy in 'discontinuity' perfectly described by
Jonathan Benthall when he commented, writing in Studio International
in 1969, on how: ' discontinuities between science and modern
art'…are….'as interesting as their interactions'. Benthall also wisely
pinpointed the value of difference and divergence within SEAD
practices. In his view: 'there is no apparent correlation between the
stature of a given artist and the validity of his scientific
assumptions'. In 1969, also in Studio International, the great
artist-engineer Naum Gabo wrote about how he had seen little success
in terms of bringing together the arts and sciences. This leads to a
second very important challenge and question for this White Paper
which is to ask how might we choose to evaluate success across the
breadth of the terrain signified by a framework such as SEAD? Without
evaluative processes there can be no methodology for learning and
passing on wisdom. As curricula and reading lists are being formed to
underpin emerging Masters courses in 'art and science' might the SEAD
initiative finally help signpost a stable direction in this
productively unstable terrain? Is it feasible to produce a summative
assessment of what constitutes success in the interdisciplinary domain
and what might this mean for future institutions? How might art and
science pioneers now define success? How might the value of preceding
events and practitioners be more readily accessed? The SEAD community
is invited to contribute to the development of proposals to address
some of these fascinating challenges.

[Yasmin_discussions] Art-Science-Technology in China ?

Yasminers

In spite of serious networking we have only one SEAD White Paper from
China ( thank you Annie Wan !)

http://malina.diatrope.com/2012/09/04/art-science-technology-in-china/

We are still accepting late white paper proposals addressing
art/science/technology programs

in China and their lessons learned. If you have contacts in China that
might be interested in developing a SEAD

White Paper please drop me at email at rmalina(at)alum.mit.edu . There
are numerous programs in China

"and its neighbors" but our methodology is biased as are all
methodologies ( yes I am post-modern) .

http://seadnetwork.wordpress.com/white-paper-abstracts/abstracts/

The SEAD is an open international call but suffers from all the
'asymmetries of discourse' that pose real

problems in our art/science/technology community of practice. We are
working in english which works

somewhat in the sciences and engineering, but often not at all in the
arts and humanities. The call has been

issued from the USA which immediately poses a problematic
contextualisation given the cultural

ideologies of the USA. Most of our responses come from people in the
Academy , not the independent creators

and inventors where much of the exciting activity is occuring these
days. The DYI community is barely represented in

the 80 SEAD white paper abstracts. Almost all the white papers re
presented as classic academic proposals- in text-

we received almost no proposals for video white papers or
multi-medial hypertexts.

Here is Annie Wan's Abstract

Roger

PS China is not the only (essentially) missing part of the world in
this project.

A STUDY OF ART/ SCIENCE COLLABORATION IN CHINA AND ITS NEIGHBORS

Coordinator: Annie Wan

Scientific inventions of Ancient China are immensely important to our
global culture and everyday life,
while traditional artworks (paintings and sculptures) possess a long
history in China. In this time of
economic boom in China and its neighbors, science finally meets arts
in various ways, such as usage
of fireworks and gunpowder in Cai Guo Qiang's works, interactive art
by Feng Mengbo, etc. This paper
consists of interviews with artists/ engineers in China (and its
neighbors) and their perspectives of art/ science
collaboration in this socities. The research analyzes differences and
similarities between practices in China
(and its neighbors) and that in Western countries. It also
investigates their definitions of technologically-assisted
art and potential problems in art/ science collaboration. Lastly, it
foresees how to extend the boundaries
of current art/ science collaboration practice, suggests both possible
conceptual and technological
developments to artists/ engineers and academia.

Hi Roger, Eugenio and Yasminas,

many of you are familiar with HONF, the media art and technology lab in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. One of their current projects - 'Micronations / Macronations: Democratising Energy' may be of interest to you. [Yasmin_discussions] SEAD White Paper from Indonesia: Jogja River Project by lifepatch.org

Yasminers

Here is our first SEAD White Paper from Indonesia

The emphasis on agriculture is of note- are there any yasminers
involved in art science projects related to agriculture ?

Also- if you look at SEAD abstracts

We still have a very biased selection of SEAD white papers= none
from africa or the middle east- we are accepting late abstracts from
these regions

Roger

Abstract on Jogja River Project by lifepatch.org

Local creative communities activities are growing rapidly in
Indonesia. These communities are active in
various fields, ranging from the focus on arts, science, technology,
education etc. The growth of creative
communities is increasing significantly in urban areas which have
better infrastructure and advanced information
system, which could give the local creative community to evolve
toward a higher level of professionalism.
Yogyakarta as an example is a student city with more than 102
institutions of higher education, a province
which has the largest number of institutions of higher education
in Indonesia. Located in the center of the island
of Java, Yogyakarta is one of the centers of education, arts and
culture in Indonesia. Strategic geographic position
, high quality education and affordable living cost have made
Yogyakarta as one of the top destination for students
from all over Indonesia to seek education. By these backgrounds,
Yogyakarta currently have remarkable
creative communities consist of young people from various ethnicities
and cultures. Within the extent of these
scope, the creative communities that have emerged also consists of a
multidisciplinary youth as their members.

A large number of creative communities and its' activities in
Yogyakarta often leads to inter-community
connections between one another. Several different communities have
collaborate and work together in an
activities, each contributing accordingly to their functions and
focus. From the development of various communities,
many new initiatives were build by such interactions, the effort to
collaborate with communities from different
disciplines to achieve a wider and complex goal through one
collaborative actions. These was the main
background of lifepatch activities in creating collaborations with
the creative communities in Yogyakarta.

One of the result from the collaboration is a project called Jogja
River Project (JRP) which started in April 2011.
Lifepatch conducted a collaboration with a community of scientist
from the microbiology laboratory of agriculture
faculty UGM Yogyakarta. The main focus is to measure water
condition by collecting water samples from Code River,
the main river of Yogyakarta city.
The samples were used to analyze Coliform bacterial pollution which
have increased significantly due to the rapid
development of riverbank settlements in urban areas. The citizen
choose to dispose household waste water directly
to the river, which made most of the housing in the riverbanks are
not equipped with proper sanitation.
The project was then expanded with the collaboration with Cantigi
community to create a visual documentation
of Code River areas.

In 2012, JRP were conducted in 2 other river of Yogyakarta, Winanga
River and Gajahwong River.
Unlike the first project, JRP
2012 were open for participation from other people and communities.
The result was an expanded range
of activities from the main focus mentioned above. While gathering
water samples and collecting visual documentations,
participant of JRP also cleaning the river basin area from
non-organic waste, mapping of natural resources,
listing inventory vegetation and animals in the watershed and
independent water resource empowerment mapping.
In 2 activities, JRP 2012 have attracted more than 70 personals
from more 15 communities which acted based on
voluntarily to conduct activities that benefited the local society.

With these project, lifepatch would like to expand the collaboration
with international communities with two
main objective of
the collaboration. First is to create a representative online site
of local potentials in 3 riverbanks of Yogyakarta.
The focus of the collaboration is to process previous gathered
materials and gathered more field data obtained
in 2013 as a comparison to the data in 2012. The data will be
compiled and presented in a location based
interactive online site which can be used by the
local citizen. The second objective is to analyze coliform pollution
issue in the 3 main rivers of Yogyakarta.
Lifepatch would like to collaborate with international communities
in developing an affordable waste water
sanitation and water purification installation by utilizing local
materials in Yogyakarta. These installation
would be very useful for the society in riverbanks area since most
of the housing lacked on adequate
sanitation and filtration facilities. Lifepatch believe that JRP
could facilitate such collaboration to harness
the local potential and offers a solution to the local issue with
interdisciplinary practice and approach.
