Re: [Yasmin_discussions] Synaesthesia discussion finishing statements

Dear Discussion Group,

Due to my involvement in some intensive courses for art students in The
Hague and Brussels I wasn't ably to introduce myself earlier to you. I am
working as an art teacher in The Hague where I am senior researcher at the
Interfaculty ArtScience of the Royal Conservatoire and the Royal Academy of
Art. There, and at the Transmedia master-after-master of Hogeschool
Sint-Lukas in Brussels I teach the introductory courses Synesthetics I and
II and research groups in the field of Mediated Architecture and
Environments. My interest in synesthesia and, what I call since last year,
synesthetics, started in 1979 with my experiment 'experimental synesthesia'
at the Psychological Laboratory of the University of Amsterdam and in the
period 1984-88 with dr. Larry Marks at the Pierce Lab in New Haven. In that
period I wrote a number of articles and chapters in books on synesthesia and
the unity of the arts, most of them in Dutch. In 1994 together with club
Paradiso in Amsterdam, I founded the Sonic Acts festival which will have its
13th edition soon. I am a Ph.D candidate for the Academy of Creative and
Performing Arts of Leiden University.

To summarise my position regarding some of the issuses raised in the
discussion, I wrote an imaginary lemma for the term: synesthetics.

_____________________________________________________________________

syn·es·thet·ics
n.
1. (used with a sing. verb)
a. The branch of esthetics (Eng. aesthetics) that deals with joint
esthetics, the artistic effects resulting from bringing together
esthetics from different disciplines in one work of art, often as a
consequence of the use of new technologies
b. In Kantian philosophy esthetics is the branch of metaphysics concerned
with the laws of perception. SynesthesiaŠ "is a term that refers to the
transposition of sensory images or sensory attributes from one modality
to the otherŠ" (Marks, 1978). The word synesthesia is composed of two
elements: Œsyn¹ (with, together, alike, similarity) and Œaesthesia¹ (to
feel, perceive). In analogy we may describe synesthetics as Œjoint
esthetics¹
c. Synesthetics, synesthetic art, synesthetic metaphor and sensory
synesthesia are all manifestations of a guiding perceptual principle:
Œthe unity of the senses¹. According to ethnomusicologist Erich M. von
Hornbostel (1925) this interrelatedness of the senses can be observed
in daily life situations, in new media such as film, as well as in 'the
unity of the arts' which was given from the origin (masked dance)

syn-esthetics
2. (used with a sing. verb) The study of the esthetics of visual music
(Castel, 1725), Gesamtkunst (Wagner 1949; Kandinsky, 1911), Œthe art of
relationships¹ (Mondrian, 1925, Moholy Nagy (1927), Œsynaesthetics and
kinaesthetics: the way of all experience¹ (Youngblood, 1972) and of more
recent forms of generative art, interactive art and mediated environments
3. (used with a sing. or pl. verb) A conception of what is artistically
valid or beautiful: "conceptual synesthetics" (4¹ 33² by John Cage, 1952).
4. (used with a sing. or pl. verb) An artistically beautiful or pleasing
appearance: "They're looking for electric music theater, not for
synesthetics², Dick Raaijmakers, 1995
__________________________________________________________________

So for me Hornbostel's paradigms 'the unity of the senses' and 'the unity of
the arts' are still essential for any fruitfull discussion on synesthetic
art. Being surprised that Hornbostel's original paper Die Einheit der Sinne
(1925)/The Unity of the Senses(1927) is hardly ever refered to, my first
suggestion for the group is to read this artcle. It can be found at
http://gestalttheory.net/musicology/hornbostel1.html.

Another omission in the discussion is any reference to Serge Eisenstein's
The Film Sense and especially the chapter on the Synchronization of the
senses, and Gene Youngbloods book Expanded Cinema (1970), Part Two
Synaesthetic Cinema, and the role of synesthetic perception as related to
vertical montage, collage, and 'the way of all experience'. See
http://www.vasulka.org/Kitchen/PDF_ExpandedCinema/ExpandedCinema.html

I hope that this discussion will be continued on the new LEF website.

Frans Evers

[Yasmin_discussions] audiovisuals

Such discussions, about synesthesia or other events
interested and attracted me, specifically over long
period of time... accordingly, pointing again to a recent web site of mine
with many multimedia video clips,
will be quite just in www.anatolia2010gi.blogspot.com
Along the discussions, ideas not supporting a juxtaposition of new music

[Yasmin_discussions] Fwd: Art, Archaeotechnology and performance re synaesthesia

Dear Yasmin announcements; i wonder if you would consider posting this
vis a vis the synesthesia discussions, this may be relevant because the
Hampi stone musical pillars that Iam elucidating at this event may represent
in their own way a traditional example of the coming together of the visual
arts and music in something that may have ramifications for the synaesthesia
discussions

Special Session on The Art and Design of Intelligent, Hybrid Environments

Session Chairs:

Dimitris Charitos, University of Athens, Greece, vedesign@otenet.gr
Martin Rieser, De Montfort University, UK, mrieser@dmu.ac.uk

This IE09 session investigates the process of creating intelligent and
responsive environmental experiences, supported by ubiquitous computing,
mobile communication and location aware technologies. It specifically aims
at documenting research conducted into the design of intelligent spaces for
supporting human everyday activities or mediated communication as well as
the critical use of these technologies for artistic expression.

Ubiquitous computing, mobile and locative media technologies may be seen as
systems of technologically mediated communication, providing the opportunity
to relate physical environments with digital information in order to create
novel hybrid (virtual as well as physical) spatial experiences, which may
function as the context for human activity. Moreover, the emergence of
intelligent environments has led to new ways of creating, representing and
communicating meaning in relation to space, with an artistic intention.

The processes involved in designing such complex systems as well as the
augmented environmental experiences they support are not very well
understood; nor are the social, psychological and cultural implications of
using intelligent environments and how these implications may inform the
design process. This session will attempt to address these issues in order
to develop an understanding of the design of intelligent spaces for
supporting human everyday activities, as well as of the critical use of
these technologies for artistic expression.

Possible application areas include but are not restricted to:

* Documenting and investigating the process of design for hybrid
intelligent spaces
* Artist-led insights into creating and experiencing responsive, hybrid
intelligent environments (theoretical position papers or documentation of
relevant artistic works)
* The cultural contexts, implications and aesthetics of hybrid intelligent
environments
* User Studies which aim at informing the design of intelligent environments
by investigating the social and psychological impact of their use
* Precedents for designing intelligent spaces

Contributions that present specific design or artist-led projects and
interventions, which are appropriately supported by a theoretical
perspective will be encouraged. Studies that provide insights into the
impact of hybrid intelligent environment use on human (social) behaviour,
navigation/orientation, emotional states etc., are also very relevant, to
the extent that they relate to the environmental aspects and parameters that
induce this impact on the user. This may consequently inform us about the
context and circumstances within which design decisions are being made.

In recent years isolated studies and integrated efforts from different fields of knowledge have contributed to the much-desired access consciousness, both in material production and the sensory experience, understanding the intent as an intervention in science and more specifically to physician level. This contribution allows us to know that the pace of work of consciousness in the individual or society, is going to work or keeping interactivity, resulting in effort, experience and consequences (these processes, typical of the transmission mechanisms of kind). The consequences, in this case affect a conceptual and behavioral changes due to the acquisition and incorporation of a repertoire of new skills and adapt better to new formulations of demands, action and transformation.

As researchers, we are sensitive to such developments as educators and how to create mechanisms of compression, access, control and management theory and practical, to implement activities and individual and collective experiences with new ethical standards for real complexity of the motivations, optimization of a car and inter - activity, awareness of new sensibilities and addressing new realities.

Good effort but decadent cultural level have been various manifestations of language and symbols such as calligraphy, or representations as gesture and song, among others. The challenge at this historic moment is to incorporate strategies such as goal writing, Music and Visual reporgrafia, the metariales EMS, among others, which point to the potential contributions of synaesthesia and relaxation. These efforts are noted by a neodidactica, educational goal and neogestualidad implemented through resources and procedures that values innovation away from an empty knowledge of results to ensure a thorough possession of intrinsic, that is going to essence of being itself and not the pseudo institutional agree.

Another interesting challenge is the deepening of this mechanism for teaching innovation, in its dynamics onto-epistemological theory (without falling into rhetorical) to mobilize technical assistance to develop methodological and instrumental creative practice.

A conceptual approach on Metadidáctica holds the Neogestualidad and could be given, among other dimensions, by:

• WRITING GOAL: as an abstract symbolic structures as defined by the language, its role in transmission, understanding, management intervention and action on a reality beyond what obviously understood and accepted llámese sound, writing, etc. signs. The essence of this structure would be represented by a so-called meta.
or Meta content: as noted above this concept beyond what obviously understood through a tradition in conventional terminology and practices that lead to an understanding and a simplistic application, such as "graphic", "image", "notation", "design , "" drawing ". The challenge would be to investigate the shape and the association of these potential meta, challenge us to art and being creative reference.

Nature and the Quality of origin in its epistemological and ontological sense refers to the management of a knowledge of the bias-free speech and the institutionally agreed, although it is a basic experimental object is not given by some previous scientific concepts and predictable results is construibles realities within the complex world of multi-individual, without this implying a need to indución mental states, or the realization of tangible objects. I think in general, do representations of our inner life, and external relationships and express them through metaphorical meanings, languages and performances since the nature of these expressions are marked by the transfer of information and ways genetics and socially accepted. The challenge in this new mode would be to achieve a new dimension of consciousness to explore mechanisms of representation somewhat isolated from the conventional operation. Synaesthesia is this sense is an interesting, as
well as work on the relaxa tion, because somehow it is not easy to enter a new paradigm of thought and action.

processes or development: work on the goal conscience. Expression, understanding, respect, communication and training.

or practice and use: utilities exceed speech therapy and material representation, leads to more motivation and a target performance goal.

or Subjects: partners open to new processes of openness and creativity, high levels of sensitivity and a positive attitude heuristics.

Greetings

Antonio

Dear George,

you are welcome to use the diagram in you book. You can translate the
one published in the Italian edition of L'Art Biotech or download this
one which is in english: http://www.noemalab.org/download/Bioart_to.pdf

The diagram was originally presented in the speech "La doppia
articolazione del vivente" ("The Double Division of the Living") I had
in Turin at the International Conference "From Land Art to Bio Art,"
20 January, 2007 ( http://www.noemalab.org/sections/arte_focus.php?IDFocus=205
sorry, only in Italian).

The conference papers were published in a book in Italian and English: http://www.ibs.it/code/9788877572295/mulatero-ivana/dalla-land-art.html

Thank you and best,

About the Technical Target

It should be the expectation that there appears as an intrinsic goal of ecology. A metabiologia. His understanding and management requires an ad hoc discipline.

Through the development of the lands in sensitivity and handholds perfectly definable references that are not visible from the conceptions of "reality psychophysics" and "ecological environment" that makes it very difficult to overcome the weight of indecision caused by the inadequacy of the instrumentality of law and ad hoc.

This disorder causes deformation or failure, and especially disorientation or "hyperactivity" by the inability to gain access to an integrated operational sequences of sounds, graphics and diagrams neogestualidad that have nothing to do with music, painting, dance or film, literature, aesthetics. . etc, formats all conditioned by the conventional grammar and writing their answers arbitrary conclusions that ruin any option or alternative that truly leads to landing in the goal a reality.

In reading all of them suffer front error based on an instrumentality, and whose legality criteria from the perspective of axiology pseudo interpráxica are operational.

(Formaly-Informaly/Cuantitative/Cualitative) ultimately lead to inaccurate results and detailed terms for the effective interaction in terms of general direction.

It is done at the lack of value placed on it is the goal to acquire the cross central value. Survey of general patterns of effective action not stereotypes. Target speech.

Meta discurso.

[Yasmin_announcements] Basiques : Animation numérique / Computer animation

Dear Yasminers,

Leonardo/Olats has just published the following. The English
version of this announcement is after the French. Note that
"The Basiques : Animation numérique" is only in French
anyway ;-)

Les Basiques : L'Animation numérique par Véronica Camacho
http://www.olats.org/livresetudes/basiques/animationnumerique/basiquesAN.php

Aujourd'hui, l'animation numérique a conquis à

Dear all,

I have a student who would have an erasmus on new media arts - art/
science/technology in Europe. I think it would be important to have an
updated list of the intitutions who can host courses and, in prospect,
masters on these topics.

Do you have any suggestions?

Thank you and best,

Pier Luigi

[Yasmin_discussions] Synaesthesia discussion finishing statements

Dear YASMIN Synaesthesia Discussion Group,

Thank you for your interesting feedback and comments on the Discussion topic of "Synaesthesia" during this last month. These following days are going to be the last remaining days of our "Synaesthesia" discussion, so we may now start sumarrizing the results and post our finishing statements to the YASMIN Discussion list.

I have learnt quite a lot form your contributions during this last month and in order to summarize some of the very interesting issues and topics that were raised during this last month that we have all been following this discussion, I feel that I am in the need to priorize some of the issues.

First of all, there is a general misconception of synaesthesia, the neurological condition associated with the blending of the senses and visual music, an individual art form that goes far back in art history and is associated with painters and experimental filmakers of the beginning of the 20th century.

A lot of contreversial theories and debates also on mystical and alchemical misconceptions of art and synaesthesia, including theosophism and mediatation practices.

Second, there is a vague categorization between multimedia art and intermedia art with synaesthesia. Most of our experts have argued, that not all multimedia art is synaesthesia, however, some aesthetic elements are recognizable in that sense.

In a strict defintition of the sense, however, synaesthesia art is a term more suitable to art that is being created by synaesthetes. However, a lot of interesting research on art and cognition can be based in these individual artworks for non-synaesthete artists and of course, a lot is to be learnt by these examples on creativity in arts education.

Personally, as Andrew Hill has also pointed out and Liz has commented from her research experience, I am very interested in the research of Dr. Ramachandran and Hubbard regarding language formation and synaesthesia, including certain aspects of creativity to be found in the general population and of course, metaphor. For the past few years of my Ph.D.research, I have been investigating ways to connect these metaphors and establish an aesthetic communication theory applied to hybrid art forms as they have evolved from experimental film to interactive new media.

As I have suggested in some of my previous wirtings there may be a sort of "cross media abstraction" pattern to be recognized in the aesthetic "language" of certain interactive hybrid media art forms that simulate synaesthetic perceptions following the evolution of technology that relates to synaesthesia - maybe in a structural analogy to the "cross modal abstraction" pattern as observed by Dr. Ramachandran and Hubbard while examining synaesthetes in the formation of language in the human brain.

In this theoretical model initial hypothesis I had also taken under consideration the writings of R. Solso on the evolutionary potential of synaesthesia genes and its contribution to the ability of language formation in the human species. One can read more on this theory in his last book: "The psychology of art and the evolution of the conscious brain (2003)".

We are also interested now in finding ways for continung this discussion further and therefore we are currently preparing the Synaesthesia Discussion Group on the new LEF website, some of you have already used the previous website and have been posting there some interesting comments and announcements on upcoming events, including links to articles or research and bibliography updates.

More information on how to participate.to the LEF Discussion Group and the appropriate link will be announced soon.

Any other suggestions and feedback coming from you on how we could keep this discussion open and going from the end of this month and onwards are also more than welcome.

See you on-line very soon :-)

Best,

Veroniki
