Re: [Yasmin_announcements] Maria Paschalidou: NARRATIVES ON A GYN EXAM TABLE

Dear Cláudio Fajardo,

Thank you very much for your comments.

Unfortunately, there is not any possibility of displaying the main video of the
installation "The Stories" via internet. There are many reasons for that.
First of all, the video has long duration and secondly, but more
important, the video is part of an entire interactive installation. At
the exhibition venue of the installation, I invite viewers to lie on
the constructions/simulations of the gynaecological table and watch the
video "The Stories" in the same position as the one required for a
gynaecological exam. In this way, viewers participate; they further
repeat mimesis and the act of narration, while the possibilities of a
voyeuristic interpretation of the entire attempt are minimized. In
addition, the 21 stories of the video can be heard only through the
earphones that are adjusted on the constructions. Thus, viewers,
isolated from their surrounds, can focus on them better and go deeper
into their essence.

That's all for the moment.

My warmest wishes to you

Dear Maria Paschalidou,

Your work seems to be very interesting. Like a mam I think that this
situation must be uncomfortable for the women, but in that moment I
think that she is in her most intimate concentration. The depth of
this kind of narrative is almost a womb discourse. Are we as men
already to understand the intimate sixth sense of the women? I don´t
know. But your project seems to be a beginning, by the way, a
beginning from the place where we all came from.

Congratulations

PS: Where can I found a sample of this performance on the web?

> The idea for the video was inspired by an early 20th-century gynaecological exam table, which the artist bought at a private auction in Chicago in 2004.
> Narratives On A Gyn Exam Table is a video installation using the device of shared personal stories to engage questions of intimacy and control. In the installation, the medical table becomes an intimate prop for staging acts of narrating. Its solidity is interrupted by the fluidity of the participants' experiences, storytelling and acts of mimesis. The installation consists of three videos ("The Stories", "Human Traffic", and "The Table") and three wooden constructions, simulations of the original medical table. Audiences are encouraged to lie on these sculptures and watch the video with the twenty-one stories. The recordings of the stories for the installation began in Chicago in 2005 and were completed in Athens in 2008.
> The exhibition catalogue will be published by Ekkremes Editions.
> The book Narratives On A Gyn Exam Table, refers to the stages and the critical ideas of the whole project.
> It contains the twenty-one stories of the participants, analytical description of the video installation and written commentaries from: Maria Angeli (Art Theorist, Curator, Museum Educator), Kostis Stafylakis (Art Theorist, Artist), Giorgos Sympardis (Author) and Syrago Tsiara (Art Historian, Curator, Director of the Contemporary Art Center of Thessaloniki).
> The book has been published by Ekkremes edditions in both Greek and English languages".
