[Yasmin_announcements] Intelligent Environments 09 @ Barcelona, Call for papers

Dear YASMINers,

This year the conference on Intelligent Environments 09 which will take
place in Barcelona on July 20-21st at the Technical University of Catalonia.
More info in:
http://intelligentenvironments.org/conferences/ie09

The paper submission deadline is the 13th of March

I would like to invite those of you who are active in the field of
Intelligent Environments and particularly on the design of intelligent
spaces for supporting human everyday activities or mediated communication as
well as the critical use of these technologies for artistic expression, to
submit a paper for the session that me and Prof Rieser chair on the issues
of "Art and Design of Intelligent, Hybrid Environments". Please check out :
http://intelligentenvironments.org/conferences/ie09/specialsessions/08
for more info on this session, or maybe on other sessions too.

Info about the session is pasted below at the end of this message

Also, the submission is in full paper format (max 8 pages). Please check out
http://intelligentenvironments.org/conferences/ie09/submition_instructions
for more info regarding the submission and the Author Instructions for info
about formatting.

If you submit a paper relating to our session, please send it to the normal
submission process and forward it to me too.

Best wishes,

Dimitris Charitos

Special Session on The Art and Design of Intelligent, Hybrid Environments

Session Chairs:

Dimitris Charitos, University of Athens, Greece, vedesign@otenet.gr
Martin Rieser, De Montfort University, UK, mrieser@dmu.ac.uk

This IE09 session investigates the process of creating intelligent and
responsive environmental experiences, supported by ubiquitous computing,
mobile communication and location aware technologies. It specifically aims
at documenting research conducted into the design of intelligent spaces for
supporting human everyday activities or mediated communication as well as
the critical use of these technologies for artistic expression.

Ubiquitous computing, mobile and locative media technologies may be seen as
systems of technologically mediated communication, providing the opportunity
to relate physical environments with digital information in order to create
novel hybrid (virtual as well as physical) spatial experiences, which may
function as the context for human activity. Moreover, the emergence of
intelligent environments has led to new ways of creating, representing and
communicating meaning in relation to space, with an artistic intention.

The processes involved in designing such complex systems as well as the
augmented environmental experiences they support are not very well
understood; nor are the social, psychological and cultural implications of
using intelligent environments and how these implications may inform the
design process. This session will attempt to address these issues in order
to develop an understanding of the design of intelligent spaces for
supporting human everyday activities, as well as of the critical use of
these technologies for artistic expression.

Possible application areas include but are not restricted to:

* Documenting and investigating the process of design for hybrid
intelligent spaces
* Artist-led insights into creating and experiencing responsive, hybrid
intelligent environments (theoretical position papers or documentation of
relevant artistic works)
* The cultural contexts, implications and aesthetics of hybrid intelligent
environments
* User Studies which aim at informing the design of intelligent environments
by investigating the social and psychological impact of their use
* Precedents for designing intelligent spaces

Contributions that present specific design or artist-led projects and
interventions, which are appropriately supported by a theoretical
perspective will be encouraged. Studies that provide insights into the
impact of hybrid intelligent environment use on human (social) behaviour,
navigation/orientation, emotional states etc., are also very relevant, to
the extent that they relate to the environmental aspects and parameters that
induce this impact on the user. This may consequently inform us about the
context and circumstances within which design decisions are being made.
