Dear Yasminers,

We follow our discussion with Jadwiga Charzynska in Poland, who is
answering to the questions that we addressed in our blurb with the example
of the project "Art+Science Meeting".

Best wishes,

Guillermo.

ART+SCIENCE MEETING IN LAZNIA CCA

The Art+Science Meeting is being realized since 2011 by the Centrum Sztuki
Wsp??czesnej ?A?NIA (LAZNIA Centre for Contemporary Art) in Gdansk. The
project is based mainly on exhibition programme, which present the
achievements of world?s most outstanding artists who create in the area of
science and technology.

Within A+S Meeting we are publishing a lot of publications that allows a
wider look on the contemporary civilization, where we can notice very
important collaboration between technology and art. Apart from that we
organise workshops, debates and concerts which are held as part of the
Art+Science Meeting project.

Artists and scientist are working together in matters of extending spectrum
of explorations ? their researches involve ethical and social problems.
They create their own language, that is used to communicate with
participants and consumers. This specific language is a way of presentation
their discoveries and accomplishments. We can ?hear? this voice in the form
of exhibitions, workshops, art?s visualizations, performances, conferences
and discussion panels etc.

>From a perspective of cultural institution this cooperation is very
effective. What is most important artists gains extended field of their
artistic expression; while scientists get the possibility to present their
researches through the language of art ? so they uprate their work with
artistic expression and gain the informal way to verify their experiments.
Artist have more freedom - licentia poetica ? to create narrations around
the subject, that they are interested in. On the contrary scientists should
have hard evidence to support their thesis.

Cultural differences are very important in this kind of our activities.
Back in the day Gdansk was a part of important trade routes. It is the city
which was able to be independent, while the city authorities had a lot of
power and respect during the golden age of the city. Gdansk is also a
symbol of political and democratic transitions in the post-war history of
Poland. Gdansk was and still is the city of artists and scientists, for
example: Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit ? physicist, Jan Heweliusz ? astronomer,
mathematician, Arthur Schopenhauer ? philosopher and G?nter Grass ? writer.
In addition, a lot of artist, like Abraham van den Blocke, Izaak van den
Blocke, Jan Bernard Bonifacio, Daniel Chodowiecki are also related with
this city. Politician, that are associated with a Gdansk, are for example
Lech Walesa and Donald Tusk.

This is a whole bundle of experiences, that affect (in positive way) our
work and collaboration between artist and scientists. From our point of
view (organizer of exhibitions and other projects) is hard to tell how this
learning process from each other should materialize. I would rather ask
university specialists.

In the case of art and science project artists as well as scientists are
the actors. In the role of users are viewers and spectators. Actors that
are not present (I would rather say invisible) are teams of scientists that
are supporting the technical aspects of the project. Of course, in my
understanding of word ?actor?.

All the best,

Jadwiga Charzy?ska
