*Announcement*
An important ScienceDigital Conference to celebrate the *United Nations
General Assembly, 75th anniversary *begins 24 September, ending 2nd of
October 2020
*S**cience**D**igital**@UNGA75 *raises awareness of the role and
contribution of science to the attainment of the SDGs. The contribution of
Science Digital Cooperation is foundational to the achievement of the UN
SDG?s and this important week of meetings is organised by ISC Intelligence
in Science, produced in collaboration with People Centred Internet, Medical
University Graz, AERAP Africa-EU Science Platform, LifeWatch Eric, and
others.
*Science Collaboration across continents and nations, across themes and
disciplines*
The conference will examine the enabling environment for policy, regulatory
and finance and the instruments and infrastructure needed to put in place
to sustain science mechanisms which inspire, encourage and support truly
global scientific collaboration.
*Global participation, better science enabled by attention to data, data
policy and governance*
Attainment of the SDGs will require alignment on policy and regulation that
impact science and technology, the digital economy and society. People?s
lives are now impacted and we are increasingly aware of the consequences of
how data is handled, stored, managed and accessed. Alignment is necessary
so that digitally enabled science can operate globally to address global
challenges: Science, research and development are increasingly
encountering rising data challenges which demand our thoughtful attention
followed by thorough research policy consideration.
Without regulatory equivalency or some degree of global harmonization,it?s
difficult to see how, for example, the health and medical science
cooperation that needs to happen between developed and less developed
nations will take place. We must push past science geared to the people in
developed countries, science experiments especially in health must be
globally applicable and relevant to people of all races and cultures.
Unless aligned, disparate existing regulatory frameworks are and will
continue to be a barrier to science; a barrier to innovation; a barrier to
technology transfer; a barrier that will impede progress in addressing
health deprivation and other challenges. This applies to diagnostics,
therapy development and healthcare delivery. We have reached a point where
ICT technologies and health research are intertwined but policy operates in
separate silos.
The United Nations report *?The Age of Digital Interdependence
https://www.un.org/en/pdfs/DigitalCooperation-report-for%20web.pdf>? *and
the related *?Roadmap for Digital Cooperation
<https://www.un.org/en/content/digital-cooperation-roadmap/>?* under the
auspices of the first UN Secretary General to have been a Professor of
Electrical Engineering, Antonio Guterres, have developed a blueprint for a
connected world and a vision for sustained and integrated connectivity
designed to build a trust enabled environment where science can thrive.
*ScienceDigtial@UNGA75 **promotes the idea of unitary science*
All science disciplines are ultimately linked and enabled in similar ways.
Without understanding this policymakers and legislators are likely to
embark on disparate and disconnected initiatives. Here also, the lack of
coordination and national vested interests will conspire to impede
scientific progress and the resulting innovations to address truly global
and immediate challenges. This will impede the digital cooperation
essential to reap the dividends of technology and critical to develop
guardrails for this powerful tool, which in the wrong hands can be
dangerous to life and the planet.

Yasminers
a) thanks to ken friedman post reminding of us of one of the failures
of the digital commons-
the explosion of predatory publishers- how can Yasmin help on this problem ?
b) apologies to those whose posts were approved late- like many people we
are overwhelmed with the turbulence of WWIII that combines pandemics
with climate change.
c) if any yasminer would like to spend a little donated time to keep
yasmin going and thinking
aloud- dont hesitate to contact us.
d) finally: I highly recommend the new book by Sarabeth Berk: "More
than my title:
the power of hybrid professionals in a workforce of experts and generalists"
it is very readable- some of the things that are new, are true, and
some are maybe not !
but as i read, its almost a imaginary discussion of the YASMIN
community of practice-
yes we are hybrid and amphibian - and with WWIII we need to learn to
not only walk
and swim but also fly!
feel free to post discussions of readings and sources on our Yasmin
discussion list
which has been dormant during the pandemic
