Dear YASMINERS

My map is not your
map<http://www.arteleku.net/program/my-map-is-not-your-map?set_language=en>is
the name of the seminar-workshop to be held in Arteleku (San
Sebastian,
Spain) from 21th to 26th September. I coordinate this meeting which will
discuss the use of new media to represent physical and human geography from
a cultural and artistic point of view. Specifically focuses on the following
topics:

- Strategies, tools and examples of subversive remapping.
- Show, exploiting or reconciling discrepancies in collaborative mapping.
- Altering the perception of the physical environment: hybrid interfaces
and tactics.

In parallel we will run a workshop that will address the production and
design of location-based experiences, using mobile devices and the
Mscape<http://www.mscapers.com/>software.

*Full program and registration (free) in the *
<http://www.mscapers.com/>*arteleku
website<http://www.arteleku.net/program/my-map-is-not-your-map?set_language=en>
.*

The meeting will feature the following speakers:

Dick van Dijk <http://www.waag.org/person/dick> is concept developer at Waag
Society. Waag Society is an Amsterdam based Medialab investigating the
interplay of culture and technology in relation to society, education,
culture and healthcare. Waag Society wishes to make a contribution to the
design of the information society by looking at the possibilities of people,
their creativity and culture.

Dick has particular responsibilities for Waag Society's programme on
narrativity, exploring the use of narrative structures in new media. Among
Dick's projects are several location-based projects. Dick studied business
economics and history of art. www.waag.org

Lize Mogel <http://www.publicgreen.com/>is an interdisciplinary artist who
works with the interstices between art and cultural geography. She inserts
and distributes and cartographic projects into public space and via
publications. She is co-editor of the book/map collection "An Atlas of
Radical Cartography" and co-curator of the exhibition "An Atlas", which is
touring nationally. She also co-curated "Genius Loci", an exhibition of
conceptual mappings of Los Angeles (Sci-Arc, Los Angeles, California Museum
of Photography, Riverside). She has also worked with groups including the
Center for Land Use Interpretation and the Journal of Aesthetics and
Protest. Exhibitions include the Gwangju Bienniale (South Korea,) common
room (NYC), Overgaden (Copenhagen), and "Experimental Geography" (touring).
She has received grants from the Jerome Foundation, the LEF Foundation, the
Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs, and the Danish Arts Council for
her work. www.publicgreen.com www.an-atlas.com

Fabien Girardin <http://www.girardin.org/fabien/> is a researcher and
engineer at Lift lab, a research agency he co-founded. He studies and
provokes the interplay between urban infrastructures, ubiquitous
technologies and people practices. His research employs qualitative
observations to gain insights from the integration and user appropriation of
technologies in urban environments. Subsequently, Fabien mixes the gained
knowledge with engineering techniques to foresee and prototype ideas and
solutions for designers, urban service providers, city planners and decision
makers.

Giles Lane <http://proboscis.org.uk/about/people/giles-lane/> founded and
co-directs Proboscis. He leads its research programme (SoMa) as well as
directing major projects and initiatives such as Social Tapestries, Urban
Tapestries and Mapping Perception. Giles founded and edited COIL journal of
the moving image, co-edited Ghost Stories by Pavel Büchler, conceived the
DIFFUSION eBook format and the eBook Generator and designed the StoryCubes
format. Between 1998 and 2002 Giles worked at the Royal College of Art,
first in the Computer Related Design Research Studio (1998-2001), and
latterly as a Research Fellow in the School of Communications. Giles is a
Research Associate with MEDIA@LSE, the media and communications department
at the London School of Economics and Political Science. Giles is currently
a visiting tutor on the MA Design Course at Goldsmiths College, University
of London and was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts in 2008.

Julius von Bismarck <http://www.juliusvonbismarck.com/> presented last year
his work Fulgurator, a modified camera that detects the camera flash of
nearby people to project an image in the environment for milliseconds. The
result, ghostly and unexplained apparitions in the photographs taken by
those around him. With its gleaming interventions, Julius seeks to transform
our relationship with objects, people and spaces around us that we assumed
well known.
Jose Luis Pajares (gelo) <http://www.gelo.tv/>. Director of the
seminar-workshop. Gelo is an artist and researcher in social communication
and locative media. He currently works at the Carlos III University in
various national research projects. His work applies natural interfaces that
redefine social interaction in public spaces, especially urban.

[Yasmin_announcements] ANNOUNCING YASMIN DISCUSSION : (UN)INHABITABLE?. ART OF EXTREME ENVIRONMENTS

ANNOUNCING YASMIN DISCUSSION : (UN)INHABITABLE?. ART OF
EXTREME ENVIRONMENTS

Discussion at :
http://estia.media.uoa.gr/mailman/listinfo/yasmin_discussions

@rt Outsiders (September 9th – October 11th 2009) :
http://www.art-outsiders.com/edition2009/default-en.htm

Leonardo/Olats in collaboration with the @rt Outsiders
Festival is pleased to propose this Yasmin discussion on
"Habitability and exteme environments"

The 2009 edition of the @rt Outsiders Festival that takes
place at the Maison Européenne de la Photographie from Sept
9 to October 11, focuses on extreme environments with the
title "(Un)inhabitable? Art of extreme environments".

We will hold a YASMIN discussion from September 25 to
October 15 2009 on how artists and scientists are involved
in questions of habitability and extreme environments.

This discussion will be moderated by the organisers
Jean-Luc Soret, artistic director of the @rt Outsiders Festival
Annick Bureaud, theoretician and art critic, director of
Leonardo/Olats
and Roger Malina, Observatoire Astronomique de Marseille
Provence

These are environments that were, until recently,
uninhabited by human beings and that contemporary science
and technology turn into "inhabitable" places (Antarctica,
underwater world, outer space, deserts); but also those that
are becoming "uninhabitable" due to the impacts of our way
of life (pollution, technological accidents, economical
pressures and global warming).
(Un)Inhabitable? – Art of Extreme Environments presents
works that explore the meaning of living in extreme
environments, in the imaginary realm as well as in the
physical one, in the political, social and environmental
fields as well as in the poetic ones.
Beyond the exhibition, on September 16th, a conference is
organised at the Maison Européenne de la Photographie, on
"The geopolitical stakes of the energy ressources of the
arctic zone" (6 – 8 pm)

* All Yasminers are invited to participate in the discussion.

[Yasmin_announcements] CAS October Talk: Roman Verostko

The Computer Arts Society is pleased to announce that our Autumn
Programme continues with a presentation by Roman Verostko who was
awarded the SIGGRAPH Distinguished Artist Award at last month's
SIGGRAPH conference in New Orleans. Roman is visiting London and
we are very lucky to have this oportunity to hear him speak. Please
note that because of Roman's schedule this talk is on the SECOND
Wednesday and not our usual first Wednesday.

This talk is free and members of the public are welcome to
attend.

Wednesday 14 October 2009
6:30 for 7:00pm
Birkbeck College, Centre for Film and Visual Media
43 Gordon Square, London WC1H 0PD
Nearest tubes - Euston Square, Warren Street & Russell Square

Writing the Score for Drawing.

Roman outlines sources that dominated his pursuit as an artist
for over 60 years. He identifies "form generating" ideas from
pioneers of non-objective art that shaped his pre-algorist work
and have continued to shape his approach to algorithmic art. His
presentation illustrates the transition from what he calls
"art-mind guiding hand" to "art-mind guiding machine". By doing
so he suggests that the "decision bit" and one's art ideas are
inseparable. For this session he will include a brief addendum on
his 2008 project, the Upsidedown Book and Mural for which he
resurrected pre-algorist drawings and transformed them with
digital tools.

Short Bio

Roman Verostko, born 1929, Art Institute of Pittsburgh (1949),
Professor Emeritus, MCAD (1994). Primarily a painter in his
pre-algorist work, Roman also experimented with new media with
showings of his programmed audio-visuals in 1967 long before
exhibiting his first fully algorist work, "The Magic Hand of
Chance", in 1982. A founding member of the algorists he is known
best for his richly colored algorithmic pen and brush drawings.
His generative software controls up to 14 pens and achieves
expressive brush strokes driving oriental brushes with a pen
plotter. His seminal paper, "Epigenetic Painting: Software as
Genotype" (ISEA, Utrecht, 1988), outlined the biological
analogues to generative art (verostko.com/epigenet.html)

Re: [Yasmin_announcements] ressource list for Arts in the Context of Darwinian Theory of Evolution Today

Dear Roger,

I though that this might be of interest for your list.

Many thanks

P.S. I cannot attend the Darwin conference in Alexandria in November
but if anything is forthcoming from that context I am sure it might
make for useful addition.
