[Yasmin_discussions] The newconcept of Humankind Cultural Narcissism from francesco monico

Francesco

I look forward to the narcissism/anthropocentrism discussion in YASMIN
and will be interested in seeing how this becomes part of the exhibition
concept you are all organising !!

I found this story very relevant, part of a discussion on Human/Non Human
going on at IMERA at the moment

for medical research, scientists make extensive use of 'animal models' to
try and understand diseases and treat them= and of course the animal
is only interesting if it has the same kinds of diseases as humans ( we
are very much less interested if the animal isnt a good model for humanss)-
a good example of anthropocentrism and how it affects scientific research

there was an interesting story this week
http://www.nature.com/news/2010/100316/full/464332b.html

it turns out that in medical studies using mice, almost 80% or more
of the mice used in reseach are male mice not female mice

here is what the researchers say:

Back at the bench, lab animals are still predominantly male, even in
studies of diseases that disproportionately affect women.
Investigators tend to prefer male animals because it is thought that
females might introduce variability through factors such as their
oestrous cycles. But Mogil has reported that in common tests used to
measure responses to pain, data from female mice are no more variable
than those from males (J. S. Mogil and M. L. Chanda Pain 117, 1–5;
2005).

The problem is particularly acute in neuroscience, in which the ratio
of male- to female-only studies is 5.5 to 1. But under-representation
of females occurs in most fields of basic research, according to an
unpublished analysis by Zucker and postdoctoral researcher Annaliese
Beery. They investigated the use of female and male animals in
research published during 2009 in 10 fields across 42 journals. They
found that studies in eight of the fields used only male animals more
often than only females, and that the data were often not analysed by
sex. In two journals that the researchers investigated back to 1909,
the proportion of animal studies using only males had actually grown
since the early twentieth century. The authors speculate that this is
because oestrous cycles in guinea pigs, rats and mice were first
clearly characterized only in the 1920s."""

not only is anthropocentrism very deep it is sexist

Discussion: The newconcept of Humankind Cultural Narcissism

A-non-existing-concept: Humankind Cultural Narcissism, a re-discussion
of anthropocentrism,

The 'narcisistic' artwork is done in order to explore possibilities to
generate a new cultural concept throughout an exhibit process and
having the Yasmin discussion result as material for the same concept;

A concept that has yet to be properly theorised. The term Narcissism
derives from clinical description (Nacke, 1899). Anthropocentrism - is
the tendency to consider the human being as the centre of the
universe. Cultura, in Latin, means cultivation, referred to a person,
it means education and manners,  it means civility and refinement.
Humankind culture in this light seems to be a kind of Narcissistic
neurosis in which the individual has little wiggle room and no way to
escape. The individual is obliged to assume a model of the humankind
ideal Ego as the goal of love itself. This Ego is anthropocentric, and
love, when not aimed at the discovery of the other(s), risks becoming
a suicidal weapon against self and society itself. Human, then, seems
to be a kind of cultural 'primate' who suffers from the deep malaise
that spreads beyond the individual sphere and ends up marking, through
the death of communication between species and types of humanity, one
of the limits of our current society. see:
http://technoeticnarcissus.blogspot.com/2010/01/is-there-love-in-technoetic-narcissus.html

- This new concepts would be create also around my 'narcisistic'
artwork, as artist;
- This artwork was done in order to explore possibilities to generate
a new cultural concept throughout the exhibit process;
- This artwork was exhibited aiming the Yasmin discussion result as
material for the same new concept;

as art process Is There Love in Technoetic Narcissus? was just exposed
in Turin at Pav in the exhibit Diverse Forms Most Beautiful , from the
4 of February to the 15 of April,
http://www.parcoartevivente.it/pav/index.php?lingua_sito=2 , after
this dates the concept introduced and explored by the artwork would be
elaborated in this discussion on Yasmine, shifting from video to texts
and then too a book, the book will will be exposed in a new exhibit in
Nowhere Gallery in Milan in June.

[Yasmin_discussions] Final Day for the Visual Culture and Evolution online symposium

Hi,
I wanted to remind this list subscribers that today is the final day in the online symposium on Visual Culture and Evolution organized by Cultural Programs of the National Academy of Sciences.

The discussion has been dynamic and is starting to wrap up but you can still read past posts and respond online. www.vcande.org

We have had over 3500 visitors to the site during the course of the symposium representing over 55 countries. This online format has certainly extended beyond geographical and physical boundaries.

Thank you for to everyone who has logged on and participated.

Best regards,

[Yasmin_discussions] 3rd International Conference on Interactive Digital Storytelling

--------------------------------------------------------

*** ICIDS 2010 ***

3rd International Conference on Interactive Digital Storytelling

01-03 November 2010, Edinburgh, UK
http://www.macs.hw.ac.uk/icids2010

Submission Deadline: June 14, 2010
--------------------------------------------------------

The advent of interactive graphical systems lays the basis for a new mode of
story-telling realized as
Interactive Digital Storytelling (IDS), applicable to interactive
entertainment, computer games,
education, therapy and other interactive digital applications. It raises
opportunities and addresses
challenges for redefining the experience of narrative through interactive
simulations of computer-
generated story worlds.

IDS thus offers interesting new possibilities for games, training, and
learning, through the enriching of
virtual characters with intelligent behavior, the collaboration of humans
and machines in the creative
process, and the combination of narrative knowledge and user activity in
interactive artifacts. In order
to create novel applications, in which users play a significant role
together with digital characters and
other autonomous elements, new concepts for Human-Computer Interaction have
to be developed.
Novel conceptions from theoretical work in the Humanities and interactive
art must also be
incorporated.

IDS draws on many aspects of Computer Science, and specifically on
Artificial Intelligence, with topics
such as narrative intelligence, automatic dialogue- and drama
management, cognitive robotics and smart graphics. In order to process
stories in real time, existing
modes of storytelling must be formalized into computable models, combining
ideas from narratology
with computer programming. This has so far resulted in a technological
complexity largely inaccessible
to potential creators of IDS and end-users. There is therefore a need for
new authoring concepts and
tools supporting the creation of dynamic story models, allowing for rich and
meaningful interaction
with the content. Finally, there is a need for theoretical foundations
considering the integration of so
far disjunctive approaches and cultures.

We welcome research papers, case studies and demonstrations including
interactive narrative art -
presenting new scientific results, innovative technologies, creative
insights, best practice showcases, or
improvements to existing techniques and approaches in the multidisciplinary
research field of
interactive digital storytelling and its related application areas, e.g.
games, virtual/online worlds, e-
learning, edutainment, and entertainment.

Suggested research topics for contributions include, but are not limited to:

* Interactive Storytelling Theory
* Virtual Characters and Agents
* Environments and Graphical Effects
* Interactive Cinematography
* Design of Sound Interactivity
* Story Generation and Drama Management
* New Authoring Modes
* Narrativity in Digital Games
* Mixed Realities and Mobiles
* Tools for Interactive Storytelling
* Emotion Design for Interactive Storytelling
* Non-Visual Senses for Interactive Storytelling
* Social and Cognitive Approaches for Interactive Storytelling
* Semantic knowledge for Interactive Storytelling
* Real-time techniques for Interactive Storytelling
* Collaborative environments for Interactive Storytelling
* Evaluation and user experience reports
* Case studies and demonstrations

[Yasmin_discussions] Fwd: Electronic Disturbance Theater

yasminers

As your moderator this week I approved this post though it is
not directly related to art/science/technology in the
mediterranean region, and we have tried on YASMIN
not to develop discussions that are frontally political
given the difficulties of inter-cultural dialogue around
the mediterranean region= YASMIN is a platforme to
promote collaboration.

In our community the group Critical Art Ensemble
http://www.critical-art.net/
managed to fight and survive the US suit against them
for bio terrorism, but with very serious effects on the
individuals careers and lives.

These are serious issues.

This is the fox news take:

http://www.foxnews.com/us/2010/03/10/critics-blast-transborder-immigrant-tool-irresponsible-use-technology/

Last night I had dinner in marseille with three egyptian artists, one
of the topics was
the difficulty artists in the art./science/technology community have
working within
the political and cultural environment in the middle east. The
technologies themselves is often
viewed as idealogical. We also discussed the 'asymetries' between
science and technology
producing communities, and science and technology consuming
communities and the way
this translates into idealogical issues. Science and technology are
not neutral neither
culturally nor ethically.

Here is the UNESCO entry on electronic disturbance theater

Subject: [Yasmin_discussions] Bang.Lab / EDT Update, Call For
Accountability And The Criminalization Of Research
To: YASMIN DISCUSSIONS <yasmin_discussions@estia.media.uoa.gr>

Hola all,

In the past few weeks, a number of developments have occurred in relation
to the art/research practices of bang lab and Electronic Disturbance
Theater (EDT), which we wish to share with the public in accordance with
our long history of radical transparency.

- Since November of 2009 the Transborder Immigrant Tool has become a media
event with many groups and individuals, such as Congressman Duncan Hunter
in his Op-ed in the San Diego Union Tribune, calling for the defunding of
the Transborder Immigrant Tool. The University of California system began
a financial audit of the project on January 11, 2010, in which they
requested that every member involved be interviewed by Audit & Management
Advisory Services (UCSD). The exact investigations (they claim that there
are multiple) under way have yet to be clarified by UCOP or other UC
entities, but in the interviews thus far, TBT members have been questioned
about the usage of the funds and the originality of the project. The
investigation has 'arrested' TBT's developmental process and core research
matrix.

- To add injury to injury, due to widespread media coverage of the
Transborder Immigrant Tool, members of bang.lab and EDT also have been
receiving copious hateful email and paper letters, some including threats
of physical violence and murder. The racist, xenophobic, classist,
misogynist, homophobic and transphobic "excitable speech" of the threats
has been as clear as that of the correspondence received in recent weeks
by national representatives who voted for health care legislation. Hardly
a tea party!

- On March 2nd, Markyudof.com publicly declared the resignation of UCOP
Mark Yudof in a gesture of minor simulation to encourage the imagining of
other possible futures. On March 21st, bang.lab received notice that a
faculty member at UC Riverside was being investigated in relation to this
action.

- On March 4th, bang.calit2.net hosted a virtual sit-in against the UCOP
website, providing a space for many people concerned with public education
to embody their dissent online. As a result, UCSD IT Security shut down
our server's access to the Internet for eight days. Shortly thereafter, we
were informed that an investigation of Ricardo Dominguez by the Senior
Vice Chancellor (SVC) was initiated by the UCOP to determine if criminal
charges were in order for the virtual sit-in, despite the legal precedent
that a virtual sit-in is political speech, not a DDOS attack. This
investigation--itself in the service of a denial of distributed free
speech--has been framed by SVC as potential reason to end Professor
Dominguez's tenure.

These events are of a piece with a number of troubling trends in the
current transnational struggle for education (and more equal distribution
of resources, generally speaking):

- A disregard for the academic freedom of cultural producers engaging in
research trajectories of art, literature and technology (that, for
instance, the Visual Arts Department and CALIT2 considered valuable enough
to earn Professor Dominguez tenure)

-The use of bureaucracy as a weapon, to prevent the aforementioned
research from continuing by bogging down its practitioners in endless
meetings with accountants and investigations.

- The criminalization of dissent: across the UC system and the world on
March 4th people engaged in actions, including civil disobedience, to try
to restore public education, stop the budget cuts and work towards a
better future for education. We are among hundreds of people facing
charges for engaging in dissent from the very institutions that claim to
foster independent thinking (connect the dots--consider the group of
students recently threatened with 6 month suspensions).

While we believe that poetry, walking art and queer technology cannot be
"spread-sheet Excel-ed," we, in bang lab, harbor our own concerns for the
lack of accountability that enables the UC system to continue transforming
a public university for the state of California into a private
corporation, accessible to a select few. The selective *lack* of
accountability, that bedrocks that hubris, fails to count the number of
deaths tragically enabled by the continuous gerrymandering of
international borders for instance. To perform our own due diligence in
the spirit of accounting for the here and now, we seek to "queer the
census": if you feel that you are a part of the bang.lab or have
participated in any of our activities in mind, body, spirit (in real or
virtual timespace), get up, stand up!, sign your name and/or comment
below.

http://bang.calit2.net/2010/03/bang-lab-edt-update-call-for-accountability-and-the-criminalization-of-research/

Update 4/1/2010: Yesterday, March 31st, 2 UCPD detectives showed up at
Ricardo's office at Calit2 to question him, indicating that they were
investigating criminal charges at all levels, city, county, state,
federal. The harassment is increasing in severity.

[Yasmin_discussions] Seing Eyes discussion

yasminers

As nina indicated we are wrapping up the cross modal
discussion, but closing statements are welcome

For the next few days while I am moderator I thought
i would start a new topic: Seing Eyes

there are now a number of robotic scientific instruments
worldwide providing data on line continuously

I am interested in examples of artists work that
appropriate this scientific data, as part of the discussion
on open observatories

http://www.leoalmanac.org/index.php/lea/entry/an_open_observatory_manifesto/

here is an interested new web cam in antarctica
