Hello,

I would like to raise a point.

I often see art/science events where arts practitionners and theorists in
one hand are separated from scientists doing experiments and theory on the
other hand.
I am both polymath in sciences and polymath in arts; my experience is that
we don't enrich ourself through texts and exchanges as much as through
practice, experience, and in the end de-/re-programming ourselves.
When we have this external enrichment (through description, explanation,
while keeping an external reference ie., the other), we are missing the
boat; while having an experience, all the sensoriality, sensibility,
feeling, theories, trying, fearing, going through fear, having a
breakthrough, reaching a singularity (as in Deleuze, as in phase
transition) we are forever changed and we build an internal reference.
The programming is like a set of "I know", "I'm good at" and "I can't",
"I'm not good at", "that's how it is done" and so on; we humans have
believes, habits (in thinking, feeling, doing) and programming that will
give us as certain "algebraic closure", in which we stay, in which we are
prisonners (for the intuition, it can also be called comfort zone, even
though if we give more details, the latter is even more restricting).
I believe that for many scientists, the world of arts is like "I allow
myself to break traditions in my field and my own programming"; I saw tons
of dancers being stuck into a certain program of "we behave this way", "we
do this this way", "science is this", "mathematics are that", and hence
being often more rigid that many mathematicians.
More generally, my undertanding of the actual richness and benefit of arts
and sciences interaction is definitely not the collaboration for the sake
of it but the individual transformation and de-/re-programming, and
building actual inner references. Because we have full power and
decision-making power over the inner reference, and we can enrich it in any
direction (art 1, art 2, science 1, science 2, science 3...).
I would like to encourage artists in a field to become artists in a
different field as well as scientists (to think, to feel, to act as such),
and reciprocally for scientists: to become a scientist in a different field
as well as an artist. I saw the benefit for mathematicians to become
physicists, and reciprocally, I saw the benefits for classical musics
performers to become composers, dancers, actors, conceptual artists, etc. I
saw also a certain type of mathematician being enriched by another practice
of mathematics.
How many combinations of enrichment ? For N fields, N! enrichments.
It is possible that certain "art-science" practitionners may have a certain
kind of (externally) defined thinking and practice, involving "that how we
do this" and other kinds of mimicking.
Hence: ask yourself: what is your programming ? your algebra ? your habits
and believes ? How can you break it ? extend it ? In which Topos do you
live ?

As part of the YASMIN moderator team I?m pleased to start our next
discussion in the Yasmin Discussion list.

Here we include some relevant information about our discussion protocol and
the working rules. Please, we encourage to all discussants to read it in
detail and follow our suggested directions. These will help us to build a
tidy debate and to enhance our mutual dialogue. At the same time, we would
like to apologize for our last week accidental post approvals. Our
discussion starts today, but during our pre-discussion work we accidentally
approved a couple of posts.

*Title and scope of the discussion:*

*?The Who/When/Where/Why of the today Art/Sci Practices?*

Along the following weeks we will be discussing about the actual strategies
followed in the Art/Sci practices, from different cultures, locations and
education programs. Art/Sci action is redesigning our research, but there
are many different approaches used in our day by day art/sci activities. We
will be interested to discuss about the actors, dynamics, approaches,
exchanges, programs or policies that are driving us, or we are driving to
pursue this new networked landscape of multiple collaborations. (see below
for an extended blurb).

To do it, Roger Malina and myself, Guillermo Mu?oz, will be moderating the
discussion, with the great pleasure to enjoy the collaboration from a panel
of invited discussants from all of the world:

- *Jadwiga Charzynska*: I am the director of LAZNIA CCA in Gdansk
since 2004 and in our program, one of the most important points is the Art
+ Science Meeting project, which we organize regularly from 2011. It's
really unique program in Poland presented Art / Sci projects.

is a research fellow at the ArtSciLab ? UT Dallas, and CienciArte Lab -
Fiocruz.

- *Jing Chen*: Associate professor of Arts and associate director of
Art and Cultural Innovation and Creativity Lab of Nanjing University.

- *Gustavo Ariel Schwartz.*: Physicist and writer. Scientist of the
Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) at the Materials Physics Center.
Founder director of the Mestizajes Program, at the Donostia International
Physics Center, whose purpose is to explore and cross the borders among
Art, Science, Literature and Humanities.

partnership with industry, government and academia, for over 25 years. She
joined ANAT as Art Science Program Manager in 2007, and was appointed
Director in 2012.

*Timing of the discussion*:

1) Our discussion starts today, Monday October 28th, and it is
scheduled for 6 weeks.

2) First week: During the first week, we will post an introductory post
per day from the invited discussants, where they will explain their
personal experiences in this art/sci collaborative framework. During this
week we will not publish any other post. This will help to slowly enter to
the discussion and wait for a complete overview from the invited
discussants perspective. Of course, we can send your comments to the
network, but this will be posted in the previous weeks.

3) Second-Fifth week: After the first week, we will open the free
discussion, where all members from the Yasmin network are welcome to join
us.

*4) *In our last week we will review and summarize our discussion.

*Working rules:*

- If you would like to participate, please you need to send an
e-mail to the Yasmin_Discussion list (use the following direction:
yasmin_discussions@ntlab.gr). Remember: you need to use an e-mail account
subscribed to the list.

- Our Discussion subject will be: "WWWWASP Discussion". Please, use
this in your post subject.

- We would like to ask you to not include in your reply the previous
contributions, as these difficult the readability of the e-mail. So, be
aware that you erase the content of the previous mails.

- For dedicated answers, It would be very convenient if you include
in at the beginning of your post to which one is responding.

- The moderator team will include a small weekly summary of the
debate, to refresh the ideas that have come along in the week.

Of course, all Yasminers are welcome to join us. We hope we would share
interesting ideas with the aim to develop a fruitful discussion.

This is a discussion designed by the *YASMIN moderator team*, and
co-sponsored by *Leonardo/ISAST and OLATS*.

The YASMIN moderator team,

*Blurb:*

The actual Art/Sci collaborative landscape includes more and more actions
between consolidated institutions and alternatives spaces. Art/Sci practice
is impacting the well stablished academic research activity, principally
driven by universities and technology centres and companies, where private
and public funding from research programs and agencies is getting used to
promote the collaboration between artist and scientist. There are new
founding opportunities from consolidated research agendas or many important
Art/Sci residencies all over the planet. Inside the science, research it is
starting to advocate for the transdisciplinary relations, where some of the
higher impact specialized research journals are dedicating particular
spaces to start to study them, just following the main work started many
decades ago by the reference journal Leonardo. The join action can be
understood as a ?redesigning science? program. However, in the day by day
practice much of the Art/Sci activity is happening just in side-places,
leaded by different associations and cultural groups, many times as a
result of personal activity, where processes like self-learning,
peer-learning in workshops or DIY meetings are producing
?micro-negociations? between different cultural contexts and group roots.
In both the institutional and side-place realities, one of the principal
returns is materialized as new and shared educational resources, which
helps to re-define our mutual conception of what is culture and who is
participating on it. In our discussion we will try to get some answers
about the following questions:

- Which are the actual places and context where artists and scientist are
engaged and shared their work in collaboration?

- In this context of mutual collaboration, how the artists and scientist
get their scientific and artistic knowledge? (self-teaching - peer-teaching
:: workshops - conferences -DIY meetings)

- How are affecting our cultural differences to these actions?
(geographical: latin-african-anglo-asian :: Urban-Rural).

- Which are the mechanisms and the scenarios where scientist and artists
materialize the learning process from each other?

- Who is becoming the user and the actor in these actions? And who are the
actors that are not present?

YASMIN discussion - Introductory text

This is, of course, a personal view based on my own experience and it is far from being a complete landscape of the Art/Sci practices. In the following, I will include the writers when I talk about the ?artists? because most of the interactions in the Mestizajes programme were in the field of the literature (although Art/Sci practices also took place). What I observe in general, is that the ?where?, the space where the Art/Sci interchange takes place, is biased towards scientific scenarios (laboratories, research institutes, Universities, etc.). It is not so common to have this kind of interaction or hybridization in art museums, main libraries or Humanities departments at the University. This also defines the ?who?, in the sense that artists can easily apply for residences or short stays at ?scientific scenarios? but scientists cannot do the same in the other direction.

Concerning to the acquisition of their scientific and/or artistic knowledge, my feeling (and my own experience) is that it is by far self-teaching and therefore it is hardly free of errors and mistakes (in both cases). In this sense, a much stronger interaction between artists and scientists could substantially improve the knowledge that each one would have about the other field. This interaction could be materialized not only by offering ?courses? (science for artists or art for scientists) but also (and mainly) by the face-to-face interaction between scientists and artists in workshops, conferences, meeting and informal talks. There is still a long way to go in this sense.
