Wave of the Future? Reconsidering The Neuroscientific Turn in Art History

Abstract
This essay examines the much-contested "neuroscientific turn" in art
history, taking the cues of the best of the turn while rejecting its
false starts. The author suggests that the most promising
transdisciplinary encounters spanning the brain sciences and the
humanities begin from the premise that human experience is embodied,
but the "body" itself is interwoven across biological, ecological,
phenomenological, social, and cultural planes. The author proposes
that certain media artworks critically engaged with neuroscience
productively model such an approach. Taking Mariko Mori's brainwave
interface and multimedia installationWave UFO (1999-2002) as a case
study, the author explores how works of art may complicate and augment
brain science research as well as its dissemination into other social
and cultural arenas.

Abstract
The simulation of visual hallucinations has multiple applications. The
authors present a new approach to hallucination simulation, developed
initially for a performance but which proved to have uses to sufferers
of certain types of hallucinations. The system allows real-time visual
expression, using iPad augmented reality. The system was developed
focusing on the visual symptoms of Palinopsia, experienced by the
first author. It also allows the hallucinations to be converted into
sound through visual sonification. Although no formal experimentation
was conducted, the authors report on a number of unsolicited informal
responses to the simulator from palinopsia sufferers and a charity.

Re: [Yasmin_discussions] cognitive innovation in plymouth
There are some "classical" works.
- Lygia Clark googles
http://actuphoto.com/2214-lygia-clark-de-l-oelig-uvre-a-l-evenement-musee-des-beaux-arts-de-nantes.html
(many web sites document this work)
- Also Julio Le Parc had proposed some glasses that were
distording the normal vision. They were exhibited at his
retrospective in Paris last year at the Palais de Tokyo.

Re: [Yasmin_discussions] Cognitive Innovation in Plymouth
Fascinating to hear of your Voodoo Lounge experience in Plymouth. Cognovo sounds great. Re: turning the world upside down there is an event next month in London which will lbe looking at this in another way also addressing neuroplasticities and the current so-called 'cognitive turn'. Details below. In thinking about how best to contribute I have been looking at various developments including Google's recent purchase of Deep Mind and the general high speed evolution of machine learning. Does predictive analytics not only map but perhaps shape our desires? So how far should we regard innovation as the priority in relation to value? Your question about artists contributions is a valid one.

The Psychopathologies of Cognitive Capitalism: The Cognitive Turn
New Academic Building LG02, Goldsmiths University of London
Friday 23rd and Saturday 24th May 2014
Free and open to all - no booking required
We are currently transitioning from an economic system dominated by artisanal and industrial production to one ruled by information with its emphasis on communication, affect and cognition. Not without controversy, the term cognitive capitalism has been coined to describe these new sets of conditions. This symposium continues to pose many of the same questions asked in Part 1, held in Los Angeles in collaboration with California Institute of the Arts and Art Center College of Design, and Part 2, hosted by the ICI-Berlin which further elaborated those topics of Part 1 and began describing its' "cognitive turn." Part 3 will take this analysis one step further.
Although cognitive capitalism has been investigated quite intensely in relation to such topics as abstract and immaterial labour, informational capital, real and formal subsumption, social production of surplus value, its connection to the brain itself has been so far limited. This symposium will consider the brain from a developmental point of view using such terms as neural plasticity and epigenesis to understand cognitive capitalism in light of theories of extended mind. The aim is to formulate a new form of cognitive activism.
The symposium will consider the relationship between the attention economy, the 24/7 demagoguery of the sleepless society always on call, valorization, consumer neuroscience and conditions such as ADD, ADHD, panic disorders, autism, narcolepsy and other sleep disorders. It will utilize experts from archeology, philosophy of mind, neuroscience, and politics to consider whether a new form of anti-psychiatry can be developed for the 21st century. This conference means to inform the theoretical community on all sides of these issues in the hope of producing the epistemological tools necessary to combat the new forms of authoritarian governmentalization now on the horizon.
Organized by Mark Fisher and Warren Neidich.
Participants include: Amanda Beech, Franco Berardi, Bronac Ferran, Matt Fuller, Scott Lash, Lambros Malafouris, John L. Protevi, Dimitri Papadopoulos, Luciana Parisi, Alexei Penzin, Steven Rose, Kerstin Stakemeier, and Bruce Wexler

[Yasmin_discussions] yasmin moderator this week and discussion of the arts and cognitive innovation
I will be your yasmin list moderator this week-
both for the announcement list and the discussion
list (please dont send announcements to the discussion list !)
This week I will be in Plymouth, England for the kick off workshop
for a new 3 year european initiative on cognitive innovation
http://cognovo.eu/
CogNovo is an Innovative Doctoral Programme, funded by the EU Marie
Curie initiative and Plymouth University,
to foster research training in the emerging field of Cognitive
Innovation. CogNovo offers transdisciplinary
training that combines scientific studies of the neural correlates and
mechanisms of creativity, with investigations
into the role of creativity in human cognition, and their application
in sustainable technological and social innovation
The participants are an interesting mix of researchers in the
sciences, humanities and the arts
I thought a possible topic for our yasmin discussion list could be;
How do recent discoveries in the neuro and cognitive science, as well
as new work of artists
with technologies developed for the neuro and cognitive sciences, open
up new avenues
for artistic and scientific experimentation ? For instance new
consumer product immersive
head mounted displays ( like the oculus rift) are opening up
sophisticated ways of manipulating the
human sensorium ( remember how the first hand held sony video cams
blew open "expanded" cinema).
If this topic is of interest to you please send your comments to the
yasmin discussion list
Finally let me note that the Leonardo Education and Art Forum ( LEAF :
http://www.leonardo.info/isast/LEAF.html )
has issued two calls for contributions:
a) the Leonardo Labs database of MA and PhD theses, editor in chief
Sheila Pinkel- deadline June 1
b) the CDASH call for curricula in art/science/humanities; editor in
chief Kathryn Evans- deadline July 31 2014
for details see
http://malina.diatrope.com/2014/04/21/international-call-for-art-sci-tech-curricula-and-phd-theses-abstracts/
oh yes- if you are a new member to yasmin -please send an email
introducing yourself briefly to the list
and do send us announcements of art/science/technology events around
the mediterranean and beyond

[Yasmin_discussions] new ideas for integrating the arts, humanities and computer science
I highly recommend this report chaired by Noah Wardrip-Fruin at UC Santa Cruz
adn would be interested in yasminer comments and reactions
http://mediasystems.soe.ucsc.edu/report
this report was funded at the same time as the SEAD report I co
chaired (http://seadnetwork.wordpress.com/white-papers-report/ )
Noah's report has a number of recommendations for integrating the
arts, humanities and computer science
"Envisioning the Future of Computational
Media,"http://mediasystems.soe.ucsc.edu/report
This is the final report of the Media Systems project, held at
University of California,
Santa Cruz in 2012. This gathering brought together field-leading
participants from media-focused computer science,
digital art, and digital humanities — located in and across
universities, industry, federal agencies, publishers, and other
stakeholders in the future of media. Different participants focused on
diverse aspects of how new media forms are
impacting culture, education, the economy, and other areas of national
importance, using examples ranging from the
World Wide Web to computer animation, and from video games to social
media. Surprisingly — despite this diversity of
background and focus — rather than struggling to explain our different
fields to each other, we found ourselves engaged
in deep conversation focused on a coherent set of shared activities.
For the purposes of this report, the authors have
chosen to name these activities computational media.
Computational media involves four types of work and develops four
types of knowledge and skills — generally combining
two or more of these categories simultaneously:
● Technical — computational media work requires and develops deep
technical engagement, from
the invention of new algorithms to the use of specialized tools for
purposes such as 3D animation or
examining code archives.
● Creative — computational media practitioners must exercise creative
skills, from the creation of
new genres of digital art and scholarship to the imagining and
prototyping of new technology and tool
possibilities for media.
● interpretive — the creation and understanding of computational media
requires being able to
interpret particular examples and place them in broader contexts, from
situating media forms historically
to interpreting new kinds of human learning behavior enabled by
computational artifacts.
● Collaborative — computational media work is most often carried out
by interdisciplinary group

[Yasmin_discussions] (no subject)
Anelia
Hello,
i would like to ask to those of you who are praticians: we would like to use holography for monument restoration. Sculptures do not exist anymore but there are some ancient documents. Is that feasable?
Hoping some advices or opinions...
