[Yasmin_announcements] FESTIVAL of RESEARCH, MUSIC and IDEAS

Dear Yasminers,

I'm happy to bring to your attention the first "RESEARCH FESTIVAL", where
artists (musicians) present their research in and through musical practice.

FESTIVAL of RESEARCH, MUSIC and IDEAS 17-18 September 2009
Orpheus Institute, Ghent, Belgium - www.orpheusinstituut.be
<http://www.orpheusinstituut.be/>

As the culmination of over a year of intensive research in-and-through
musical practice by its members, the Orpheus Research Centre in Music
[ORCiM] in Belgium presents its first Festival of research, music and ideas.

Through performances, presentations, talks and installations, Research
Fellows from ORCiM will share aspects of their cutting-edge insights into
music.

This Research Festival will be a source of valuable inspiration to
musician-scholars keen to experience the new questions posed and
understandings generated through artistic research. This Festival will also
reveal future directions for ORCiM, as it disseminates the work of its
researchers in Europe and around the world.

*WHEN: Thursday September 17, 2009 and Friday September 18, 2009 (until 4.00
p.m.) The festival kicks off with a concert on Wednesday September 16, 2009
22h.

*REGISTRATION: Participants can register until September 9, 2009 through the

series.

*PROGRAMME: www.orpheusinstituut.be <http://www.orpheusinstituut.be/>

RESEARCH WHERE THE ARTIST MAKES THE DIFFERENCE

The Orpheus Institute, institute for advanced studies and research in music,
has been providing postgraduate education for musicians since 1996 and
introduced the first doctoral programme for music practitioners in Flanders
(docARTES 2004). Throughout the Institute's various activities there is a
clear focus on the development of a new research discipline in the arts: one
that addresses questions and topics that are at the heart of musical
practice, building on the unique expertise and perspectives of musicians and
constantly dialoguing with more established research disciplines.

Within this context, the Orpheus Institute launched an international
Research Centre in 2007: the ORPHEUS RESEARCH CENTRE IN MUSIC [ORCiM] with
the development of a discipline-specific discourse in the field of artistic
research in music as its core mission.

Re: [Yasmin_announcements] Art Science and Beyond (Jam, Jam)

For any Yasminers in or near England there will be an event next week during
the British Science Festival at University of Surrey/Farnham College of Art
which may appeal. Would be great to see you! Details below:

*Jam! – Art, science and beyond*

*One hundred scientists, artists, and students to participate in an
innovative multimedia British Science Festival event at UCA Farnham*

An unusual public event will take place at the University for the Creative
Arts (UCA) at Farnham on Wednesday September 9, 2009. Around 100 scientists,
science students, artists and interested members of the public will attend *
Jam!* This will be a free evening event, with invited speakers, VJs, and
opportunities to encounter artists and to socialise in a friendly informal
atmosphere.

Supported by the University for the Creative Arts, the UCA Art Science &
Culture Research Cluster and GaiaNova Productions, *Jam!* is part of this
year's British Science Festival, hosted by the University of Surrey.

In a novel multimedia format, *Jam!* will present a dialogue between guest
speakers Bronac Ferran and Tina Gonsalves. The evening will be punctuated by
'sandpit' style roundtable discussions amongst the audience-participants,
'in conversation' events with interdisciplinary artists, ambient visuals and
sound from guest VJs Philip Mayer and Pedro Zaz of GaiaNova Productions, and
refreshments.

Subtitled 'Art and science and beyond' * Jam!* will explore issues raised by
cutting edge interdisciplinary work. Guest speaker, Bronac Ferran, is a
former Director of the Interdisciplinary Arts Department at Arts Council
England where she set up numerous initiatives including the ACE/AHRC Art and
Science Research Fellowships programme and the Interact series of Artists
Placements within research and industry contexts. She has a part-time role
as Senior Tutor, Research for the Innovation Design Engineering department
at the Royal College of Art and works nationally and internationally as a
media arts and interdisciplinary researcher, writer and event producer.

Artist Tina Gonsalves' creative investigations integrate art, science and
technology to produce embodied, interactive, audiovisual works that offer
new ways of experiencing the connection between our 'internal' body and its
external environment. She is currently honorary artist in residence at the
Institute of Neurology, UK, visiting artist at the MIT Media Lab, USA and
artist in residence at the Nokia Research Labs, Finland.

*Jam! * has been organised by the UCA Art Science & Culture Research
Cluster. Kathleen Rogers, Professor of Media Art and Science, and a leading
UCA cluster member, explained some of the thinking behind the event.
'Artists making hybrid art projects have been combining bio- or other
technologies and art for some decades with differing intellectual and
aesthetic intent. Artists are positioned to understand the conceptual unity
between different disciplines. Working outside of categories into shifting
hybrid domains they can reach across and build bridges between many levels
of complexity, from molecular genetics, for example, to the production of
art. It is not longer enough to look at things as art or science – we need
to go beyond these divisions.'

Fellow cluster member, Adrian Holme, added: 'we have produced an event that
will enable people from different disciplines, along with interested members
of the general public, to come together and exchange in an informal
atmosphere, and to engage with cutting edge ideas on art, science and
beyond. It will be a thought-provoking and stimulating experience, and it
will also be fun.'

The *Jam*! event runs from 19.00 to 22.00 on Wednesday September 9th 2009 at
UCA Farnham. Free tickets can be booked by visiting the *
www.britishsciencefestival.org* <http://www.britishsciencefestival.org/> or
by phoning 0207 019 4947. Early booking is advised.

[Yasmin_announcements] RFP: Funding Opportunities from the National Science Foundation CreativeIT Program

Funding Opportunities from the National Science Foundation CreativeIT
Program

http://www.nsf.gov/funding/pgm_summ.jsp?pims_id=501096&org=CISE&from=home
DUE DATE

Full Proposal Deadline Date: October 13, 2009
I. INTRODUCTION

Creativity, design, and research all contribute new knowledge and artifacts.
The CreativeIT program focuses on the commonality of these three processes
and solicits proposals that bring creative practice and creativity research
to play a role in transformative research in specific contexts of computer
science, cognitive science, information technology, education, engineering
design and science. The program considers design as a type of research in
which the definition of the problem may change in response to the
exploration and development of alternative solutions, leading to creative
solutions and innovation. The program's objective is to bring together
different disciplines associated with creative and scientific advances in a
way that is mutually beneficial. This program encourages new ways of
thinking about one discipline in terms of another, so that the
interdisciplinary nature of the project is a means to an end rather than an
end in itself.
II. PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

Information technology is playing an increasing role in extending the
capability of human creative thinking and problem solving, and conversely,
creative uses of information technology are leading to new areas of research
and innovation. Creativity is often the result of a design process in which
the exploration of possible designs changes our perspective on what the
design can or should achieve. A designer develops new artifacts in the
context of a perceived need or problem specification. In creative design,
the reflection on problem finding becomes as important as problem solving.
The combination of creativity and design thinking in information technology,
science, and engineering has the potential to define new areas and lead to
increased successful innovation. *Advances:* CreativeIT seeks proposals for
projects whose objectives are new models of creativity, new models for
research and education, or creativity enhancing tools developed in the
context of a specific discipline.

*Research Areas: *The following research areas elaborate on these potential
types of advances as guidelines for describing how the objectives of the
project contribute to CreativeIT.

1. *Understanding Creative Cognition and Computation. *Research in this
area develops or applies cognitive models that serve as inspiration for
computational models of creativity, support for human creativity, or
approaches for educating people to be more creative. This research is
typically done by adopting or adapting a model of cognition and evaluating
its creative performance in different contexts, or developing a new model of
creativity based on empirical or ethnographic studies. The emphasis in this
area is the development of new models of cognition and computation that
explain or simulate creativity and how these models open up new research
areas in computing and cognitive science.
2. *Creativity to Stimulate Breakthroughs in Science and Engineering. *This
area considers the role and performance of creative professionals in
developing new technologies, discovering new patterns in information, and in
finding new ways of seeing, knowing, and doing computing, science and
engineering. This area seeks to foster research that is conducted with
groups of people from different backgrounds in which the creative synergy is
focused on a specific context, problem, or perceived need. The result of
this research is a new product, new model, or new area of research. The
evaluation of the results of this kind of research does not follow directly
from existing metrics or performance criteria and therefore may need to
redefine relevant performance criteria.
3. *Educational Approaches that Encourage Creativity.* This area
considers a broad range of approaches to learning that encourages
creativity: multi-disciplinary teaching and learning, design studio
environments, skills development through making and doing, serious games,
and open-ended problem-based learning. This area includes the development
and evaluation of innovative computational environments for learning that
reward creativity leading to transformative changes in curriculum objectives
and structure.
4. *Supporting Creativity with Information Technology. *This area
develops new software and interaction design to support people in being more
creative and evaluates their performance through user studies either in
controlled environments with empirical studies or in the context of a
complex problem or situation with ethnographic studies. The emphasis in this
area is the development of new computing environments where the environment
itself may be a creative product, and the environment is intended to support
people in their creative activities.
