[Yasmin_discussions] ethnic cyborg

---------- Forwarded message ----------
From: Raquel Paricio <raquelparicio@evolvable.net>

Please Roger post it for me on the YASMIN-discussions:

Dear Yasminers, is a good topic to think. I'm an artist located in
Barcelona working with robots, artificial Life and expanding
perceptions in order to acquire some superior level of consciousness.
Personnel consciousness and collective consciousness. It means more
consciousness in order to evolve.

Related to the projects of ingravity, in 2007 we won a VIDA prize to
make a robotic installation made with this topic: "Columna Ingravida".
The project is just in the phase to be tested. On this project the
feeling of ingravity is done by feeling a long cue that as a
continuation of our spine. A long cue of 20 illuminated robots which
self-organize can surround the users provoking a high level of
attention at the spine and provoking the ingravity sensation of the
body.

http://www.evolvable.net/columna.htm

Roger said: "Artists like Stelarc and Kac advocate strongly that the
human being is "modifiable" in a desirable way= and that to survive we
need to accelerate human evolution."...

I agree with Roger, Stelarc, Kac... we have to accelerate our
evolution. The collective consciousness has been increased with the
use of connected nets around the world, this is a reality but it's not
enough (we can see that the disaster in the planet is increasing every
day).

My proposal (short explained) is:

1.- The personnel consciousness: it could be increased with a lot of
ancient techniques or disciplines, especially that coming from the
west. And artist can use it with a point of reference to invent new
artifacts that emulate, provoque or permit to feel  the same estates.
On this point the use of the last technologies can permit to achieve
these perceptions faster that the ancient disciplines.

For example, the question of the "ingravity feelings" (due that Roger
has pointed out the question) is some state that can appear as some
kind of advanced feeling to evolve our consciousness. A lot of
"masters" explain these states and a lot of literature has been
written about this. Also mechanisms like the tanks of gravitation used
firstly to prepare astronauts and used nowadays for body relaxation
are an example of how we can accelerate the achievement of these
feelings. The question is how to use these feelings in order to
continue evolving and not remaining only with the "feelings". Moreover
that Marceli Antunez Seiko Mikami has create the "Gravicells" project,
where the spectator-user can be conscious of some kind of
disequilibrium that can induce certain level of ingravity.

The question is to communicate the feeling and keeping the experience
in the body after using the installation to continue working on.

2.- The collective consciousness: in an article published at
Technoetic Arts I said:

"There is a way of understanding evolution that does not fit in with a
Darwinian view of evolution. The processes that lead to the evolution
of consciousness are not based on the manipulation of matter, but
rather on the transformation of energy. Human beings must have the
ability to command their environment, to command nature and to make it
respond to their needs, transforming it without destroying it.
Adaptable technology is one way to bring about such transformation.
These transformations point towards something that lies beyond
contemporary spatio-temporal concepts. It is a manifestation that
springs from the individual's love towards the collective. This
evolution will be accomplished when the union of subjectivities
towards transcendence has taken place in every corner of the planet."

Garcia, R.P. , "Res-qualia: Could consciousness evolve?", Technoetic
Arts 5:1, pp.35-44, doi:10.1386/tear.5.1.35/1 . 2007

On this point, even if I'm "attacking" the proposals of the genetics
to evolve, is not really like that. The question is the use of that in
a future. And I'm asking about other less "invasive" possibilities.

Recently Stephen Hawking  said that on this moment it is impossible to
evolve the intelligence (well I prefer to speak of consciousness, but
I suppose that on this context is the same). We have to emigrate to
other planets and that the only way to evolve is thought the genetic
modification. And that will imply the rising of a "superman" and the
non modified humans will be not necessary.

In fact, against this premonitions I continue thinking that we can
evolve our consciousness here and now, but we have to INTENCIONATE it.
The fabulous possibilities of the  genetic modifications can be used
whith ETHICAL proposes.

Re: [Yasmin_discussions] ethnic cyborg

I do not remember if there was any touch to ethnicity or any
opposition -between human and others- in Transpermia. It is called an
utopia and may be there is no place for ethnicity in utopias because
utopias are uniform.

Requem is an installation by Marcelli; "Requiem draws the idea of the
prosthesis to its logical extreme by maintaining the appearance of
life and its mechanical movements even after death." (from Marcell's
site). It is a mechanical skeleton which can move. You can get in -
wear it- and move which can learn -records- your movements, your walk,
your dance, etc. After you die it still moves as / like you. It is
actually like voice recording or even video of a person which can be
watched after his/her death. But this looks me different because it is
physical, it is an object, it is a moving thing. As an object it
refers itself rather than the recorded person.

"Bodies are both zombies and cyborgs. We have never had a mind of our
own and we often perform involuntarily conditioned and externally
prompted. Ever since we evolved as humanoids and developed bipedal
locomotion, two limbs became manipulators and we constructed
artifacts, instruments and machines. In other words we have always
been coupled with technology. we have always been prosthetic bodies.
(...) But we fear what we have always been and what we have already
become - Zombies and Cyborgs." (from the opening page of stelarc's site)

The situation is already more difficult then how Asimov sets up the
rules. Because when we talk about cyborg we can not take it as a
machine or a tool which is more appropriate to a robot. Therefore
robots may not be defined as an ethnicity but cyborgs may be. Robots
that think -when they do- can be taken also as Cyborg since thinking
is an organic process.

Lanfranco,
our proposition with "ethnic cyborg" is a position against ethnic
discrimination. We are proposing cyborg as another ethnicity to
shuffle the hierarchies based on ethnicity, nationality etc. Bringing
the artificial - unnatural- in... But the point is that the borders
between natural and artificial is already problematic as stelarc says.
If we take Stelarc's assumption, we are all cyborgs. Considering the
digital divide, some are more cyborg then the others. By this digital
divide and globalism can't we really talk about a Cyborg ethnicity?

Using the Space Station as a metaphor, Marcel.lÌ Ant·nez Roca has
developed a hybrid show alternating performance, concert and lecture.
It is structured in different modules. During the show Ant·nez wears
his Dreskeleton (an exoskeletal body interface) and with it he
samples, activates and modulates sounds as well as controlling the
films projected on two screens.
In the first module he presents some of the mechanical aspects
characteristic of his work such as the Fleshbots, the Dreskeletons,
the Biometries and the Systematurgy.
The second module takes us through recurrent images in his work.
The third module reveals the end result of the process of preparation
for the Dedalus project in Star City in the Russian Federation as well
as the micro performances that were carried out during periods of
microgravity provided by the parabolas. In these micro performances we
witness the Requiem bodybot experiment and the interaction between the
dreskeleton, the softbot and the interactive films.
The last module presents the Transpermia theory and at this point the
performance becomes more like a conference. Ant·nez proposes a new
landscape for a Utopia called Transpermia. He describes some of his
prototypes organized in 4 sections:
1 Interface: new devices with which to perceive the world and take
part in it
2 Robots: machines as metaphors for life
3 Fleeting Identities: transitory states of personality as a setting
for new experiences and knowledge
4 New Creations: models of activity in the Transpermia Utopia

Re: [Yasmin_discussions] ethnic cyborg

hello

it is not so easy to understand cyborg with ethnic add ons, but it
will be an object in the cyberspace concept and partly ethnic too...
now, in this direction i would like to mention a possible project of
mine. or rather that i will be involved at april 2010 and
it will be entitled -concertethno-. and it will be a multi media event
the electronic music composition will be based on ethnic sounds
a nd a percentage of the new visuals will represent ethnic glocalities

[Yasmin_discussions] Ethnic Cyborg

roc

i see you gave a seminar
The cultural, social, economical and aesthetic role of the human body
in Interactive Media Arts.

http://www.lanimal.org/index.php?page=generador&id=185

and i also see your robot that dissembles itself project, a radical cyborg !!

http://www.iua.upf.es/~rpares/principal_EN.html#third

do you have any thoughts on the way the body is treated within
interactive media arts as a function of different peoples ethnic origin ?
how does spanish new media interactive art treat the body differently
than french interactive media art ?

roger

Following Roger's invitation, I am attaching an abstract document about some
experiments that I have been developing in my studio and also together with
some of my graduate students in this program MACAPD - Master in Contemporary
Arts Practice & Dissemination
http://www.lanimal.org/index.php?page=master&lg=eng&act=master

Some of these experiments will be ready for public
presentation/exhibition/discussion next year so it would be nice to hear from
interested editors/curators/peers.
