[Yasmin_discussions] Whats on the Mind of the YASMIN art/science/technology community of practice ? disruptive media

Bill

thanks for your radar point about the transformation of the performance arts
by live and distributed streaming/ what one might call disruptive media ?

at the end of this email I attach a radar point submitted by Sonya
Landy Sheridan
who is one of the amazing pioneers of our community: http://www.sonart.org/
among other things she founded and ran the Generative Systems Program
at The Art Institute of Chicago 1970-1980
at a time when fax art ( remember that) was transformative !

any one have thoughts on these issues ?

From: William Joel <joelw@wcsu.edu>

What's on mind? What has my internal radar picked up on?

Well, one "thing" I've been watching is the convergence of various
electronically delivered media. Consider how non-stations, such as
Hulu and Netflix, are now "broadcasting" shows they've produced,
rather than content from other media. Also, how various broadcast and
cable stations now have a web presence. In addition, services such as
Livestream allow us to "attend" a performance from the comfort of ...
well ... nearly anywhere.

All of this implies that an individual can receive content without
ever using a "TV" or leaving their domicile. How will this impact
performance arts such as film, theater, dance, music? Will we see more
and more of a virtual audience presence at these "events", perhaps
leading to the "death" of the physical performance?

Anyway, you asked. ;-)

The Impact of Facebook Group Generative Systems

Upon Generations of Colleagues and Students

Social media on the Internet is an ideal system for linking the past
and the future in a most creative and humane way. Facebook with its
capacity for words, images, video and global links has opened up an
entire new set of imaginative possibilities. For the past four years,
my former colleagues, scientists and artists, from Asia in the West,
to Spain in East, have used Facebook to produce three publications. We
last worked together in the 1960's, 70s and 80s. Our first
publication, organized on Facebook, was Exhibition in a Box:16 Silk
Scarves. The second publication was Portable Postcard Exhibition II,
dedicated to the memory of those artists in Portable Post Card 1969,
who have since died. Our 2014 publication, distributed by The
University Press of New England, was Art at the Dawning of the
Electronic Era: Generative Systems. This publication was dedicated to
Holly Pedlosky, (d.) artist and educator. Holly with the aid of her
daughter, Dove, set up the Facebook Generative Systems Group in 2011.
Two of the publications are located at institutions and libraries that
can be located on:
https://www.worldcat.org/search?qt=worldcat_org_all&q=sonia+landy+sheridan

All three publications were organized on the Facebook/Generative Systems/ Group.

The Facebook/ Generative Systems Group makes it possible for us to
have ongoing global links. Some of the exchange is verbal and some
visual. Some exchange is purely intellectual. Yet in our new cyber
roles we may continue to learn about one another. This does sometimes
even become personal. Some of the countries where our people live are
Japan, Thailand, Australia, Mexico, all of the U.S.A., Spain, France,
England, Denmark, Eastern Europe and Germany. Often the messages are
in another language. In this way we continue our conversations in real
time and according to our own convenience and scheduling needs. Before
the Internet this kind of global, rapid, interactive exchange would
not have been possible. It would not be wise to underestimate the
productive, educational and emotional value of this on-line
experience. Experienced people, ranging in age from the mid-sixties
to the nineties have much to teach us and to learn. With the global
Internet they can continue interactive, challenging lives.

[Yasmin_discussions] "YASMIN opportunity: Art and Science at environmental and ecological field stations and marine labs"

erich et yasminers

thanks for presenting to us the work at the Kilpisjärvi Biological Station of
the Helsinki University in Lapland/Finland as part of our discussion on
the recent emergence of art science projects in field stations and marine labs

another prominent example is the work of the Harrisons who have a '50
year' project under
way at the UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA SAGEHEN CREEK RESEARCH STATION
(details below)

i jokingly refer to this as their plan migration project -since it
involves replaning
plants that are not surviving to higher altitudes

Each fenced area will have a mounted camera, 15 cameras in total, that
will take pictures on a daily basis and systematically archived. These
images will then be used for comparative review from a scientific
perspective and as visual feedback of organization into a narrative
that will carry the aesthetic power and meaning of the experiment and
the experience to a non-scientific audience, both in the Nevada Museum
of Art and in the field station itself.

We cannot predict, at the moment, which species will survive and do
well at all altitudes. The first year or two of experiments is to
determine this. The second and third year is to re-plant those that
had survived at all altitudes. The process will be recorded not only
by camera, but also by field observation.

more details below- if anyone else knows of art science initiatives at
ecological and environmental field
stations or marine labs please do bring them to our attention

let me also mention that we are doing in november on Creative
Disturbance a series of podcasts
on art and climate change as part of a participation in COP21- if
anyone has art and climate chante
podcasts they would like published please contact me- our art and

#ArtSciConverge is bringing together field stations and marine labs,
arts funders, writers, artists, philosophers, cognitive scientists,
museums, STEM to STEAM educators, archivists, writers, and others to
advance the integration of arts and science at sites of long-term
environmental research. SEAD's "Steps to an Ecology of Networked
Knowledge and Innovation" (MIT Press, 2015), provides guidance to the
effort, identifying potential pitfalls and opportunities. Amy Ione of
SEAD presented on the paper at the #ArtSciConverge formation workshop
in June, 2015 at the Nevada Museum of Art in Reno, NV.

The goal of #ArtSciConverge is to map a path forward in which arts and
humanities activities contribute as they always have to science
outreach and education, but also to fundamental inquiry, discovery,
and analyses of the grand challenges facing social-ecological systems.

Our vision is that, within five years, it will be the norm and not the
exception to include artists, humanists and social neurobiologists
with ecologists on teams that are exploring and seeking to solve the
complex social and environmental problems we face in the coming
decades.

[Yasmin_discussions] Whats on the Mind of the YASMIN art/science/technology community of practice ?

Yasminers

I thought we might launch a YASMIN discussion around emerging
topics/issues/problems/opportunities in our art science technology
community. What's been going on that's on your radar over the last few
years ?

A group of us, part of the SEAD network ( Carol Lafayette, Carol
Strohecker, Robert Thill and Yvan Tina) are currently organizing
events in Washington DC in USA the week of February 6/7. One is a
panel at the US College Art Association (Cultivating an Ecology of
Networked Knowledge and Innovation through Collaborations among
Sciences, Engineering, Arts, Design) and on 3rd February 2016, and the
other is a meeting as part of updating (details below) the SEAD report
that we developed with many Yasmin contributions and we have announced
a 'snapshot' update and are soliciting community contributions (
details below).

We will start posting on YASMIN once a day a new issue submitting by
one of our colleagues for discussion- and if you would submit your own
topic =send it to me in an email to rmalina@alum.mit.edu- format is
500 words max with some URLs.

Tell us what you are optimistic/pessimistic/excited/discouraged about
as recently emerging issues.opportunities in our art science
technology community !!

Roger Malina

Call for 5-Year Updates: The SEAD Network is collecting input about
significant developments over the past few years and would like to
solicit your thoughts. Submission deadline: 1 November 2015.

WE WOULD LIKE TO HEAR WHATS ON YOUR MIND AS IMPORTANT NEW TRENDS IN
ART-SCI-TECH in the last five years

drop me an email at: rmalina(at)alum.mit.edu

The report we published this year at MIT Press is available for free

Steps to an Ecology of Networked Knowledge and Innovation: Enabling
New Forms of Collaboration among Sciences, Engineering, Arts, and
Design

Roger F. Malina, Carol Strohecker, and Carol LaFayette, on behalf of
SEAD network contributors

In 2012, The Network for Sciences, Engineering, Arts, and Design
(SEAD) launched a White Papers initiative to build community awareness
of perceived challenges and opportunities for transdisciplinary
collaboration across the breadth of science, engineering, art, design
and the humanities. Many YASMINERS contributed to this report ( thank
you again) The resulting study takes note of the growing international
interest and development of initiatives in universities, corporations
and civil society. This synthesis report offers a set of "action
clusters" common to texts from the international response by SEAD
members. Suggested Actions are structured according to similarities of
motivation and purpose, and addressed to specific stakeholders.

The SEAD White Papers initiative was chaired by Roger Malina and
co-chaired by Carol Strohecker, with the assistance of an
international Steering Group and coordination by Carol LaFayette and
Amy Ione, Managing Editor.

Download the report for free at :
http://www.mitpressjournals.org/page/NSF_SEAD .
We will be submitting the updated report to interested groups
internationally for their consideration.

[Yasmin_discussions] YASMIN 10th anniversary

Dear Yasminers

It is with great pleasure that we are re-launching the YASMIN lists and yes !

We are 10 years old ! I will be your moderator this week ( I am in Dallas

Right now after four months in France). Monica Bello will be taking over

next week from Switzerland and CERN ! and the week after it is Soussi Houssine.

At the same time it is a time of difficulty and much human despair in the

Mediterranean region and we hope the YASMIN community can develop

e-solidarity – difficult times on all the banks of the Mediterranean....

For our tenth anniversary, Guillermo Munoz is organizing a get together in
Valencia, Spain on Thursday Oct 22 during the Art, Science and the
City conference

there (http://www.artsciencecity.com/?lang=en ) . As part of this
Guillemo made a list

the topics we have discussed in Yasmin over the last ten years. On
the YASMIN discussion

list we are about to start a discussion on what yasminers see as the
issues/problems/new

opportunities that have been emerging over the past 5 years. Everyone
is invited for

our tenth birthday party !

And YASMIN is powered by will power- all volunteers ! If anyone is
interested in running
a YASMIN discussion or serving as a YASMIN moderator please contact us
