Your PhD program in edinburgh sounds right on target !
the information you give on what the PhD students are doing after your
PhD is very interesting- as it points to the fact that these interdisciplinary
PhD programs have a variety of ways that they allow the hybrids to develop
their careers
This weekend IMERA is hosting the INTR network which
is a network that among things is discussing post-doctoral research
for the "hybrids"

the PhD pipeline in science was designed as an overall pathway
of specialisation and research training from BSc, to PhD to Post-doctoral
researcher-but the equivalent barely exists in the arts and humanities
there are almost no funded post doctoral research positions for
students coming out from art-science PhD programs- things are better
in art/design- engineering as there are positions in technology research
one of the problems faced by art-science PhD and Masters training
is the variety of possible career paths that they are part
i dont know if hybrid is a good terminology // sometimes I feel like a mongrel
incidentally you also make the point that you want to have a PhD that bridges
more widely that art-science- sometimes this is called INTEGRATIVE STUDIES
there is even an international association for integrative studies
