Re: [Yasmin_discussions] Fwd: Presentation

Hi everybody,

I too have been too busy to respond, though many times I'd have liked
to - finishing up two books, one of which deals with many of the issues
you've been discussing here - it's called Walking in Networks: artists
as cartographers. It is constructed spatially : begins on the ground
with an exemplary walking project and moves up to consider things from a
higher angle (database cartography) and finishes up by exploring a
number of "ways through".

The sheer number of interesting mapping projects out there is a bit
overwhelming. I've been involved with these issues for many years yet
wherever I scratch I come up with a couple dozen, of which only one or
two are familiar. How many artists, all over the world, are busy mapping
something at this very minute?

For the book I've had to operate a rather drastic selection. After I
finish it I'd like to return to a webmapping project I've had on a back
burner for many years (originally it was the reason for writing my
book): to locate all those maps and show how they relate to each other
and to issues of our time. Deal with this while avoiding the
one-project-after-another effect. Map this and similar discussions onto
a spatial structure. The map could locate both classic
walking/mapping/locative media projects, most of which no longer exist
(or only via documentation) and projects that are being formulated now.
Atlas of Cyberspace was an interesting experiment, unfortunately no
longer maintained, but I'd like to take it further and make a dynamic
map to which people could add their projects, proposing "ways through"
the jungle of maps.

Your suggestions would be most welcome.

Cheers,
Karen O'Rourke
