McLuhan effects ?
At the occasion of McLuhan centennial, Alphabetville organizes with
some partners including Leonardo/Olats, Iméra, ZINC, Aix en Provence
School of arts, one of the few events in France, but among many of them
around the world this year, about the thought of Marshall McLuhan on
medias and technologies.
All informations about the "Mc Luhan effects" event soon on : www.alphabetville.org
Official centennial website : http://marshallmcluhan.com/
McLuhan was a canadian professor of litterature and had training as an
engineer. He concentrated his research on the effects of technologies
and medias in the organization of societies. And he called the medias,
the extensions of man, thinking that the technologies influence first
our perception, mind, cognition, and after that cultural and social
organisms, he meant as ways and forms of life.
We will feature his assistant Derrick de Kerkhove, and we will try to
approach together its impact in his period as well as the current
effects of McLuhan thought into the digital era and the global
information society.
Mc Luhan is the inventor of the formula « The medium is the message »,
and one the first to develop in depth « the global village ».
We propose a discussion on the Yasmin list to share a reflexion on
some of the topics that will be discussed in Aix en provence from 2 to
4th of november.
You will be able to follow the programm by stream on : http://www.selfworld.net/
- 1st topic of the discussion : Electric era, speed, « global village », and the
question of responsability
Mc Luhan thought that the electric energy has been the biggest change
for the modern societies cause of the speed of this energy that can
transport information instantaneously. Telegraph, telephone, radio,
television, and now the internet are, up to mcLuhan, the consequences
and the development of the electric turn. Information, exchanges,
knowledge, have transfered in the electric age, and this change is
made by the speed. It is very different than the book age.
Here one of the essentiel effect is in this proposition : « Contracted
by the electricity, our globe is only a village. » And as in a local
village, in the global village, we are some neighbours and we are
involved in the process of the development, in sharing out the space,
etc. McLuhan follows saying that in this technological situation,
social and political functions have implosed and that « the speed of
electricity has intensified the human sense of responsability »
because all parts of the space, all communities are now associated,
and participe to the life of each other. « Our nervous system is
technologically extented in order to engage ourselves in front of the
whole humanity, … we participate deeply to the consequences of our
actions. »
It isusual today to use the terme of global and globalization, so
McLuhan is still current. In the framework of the « global village » of
information we can discuss about frontiers (real and virtual), about sharing space
against conquest of the space ( earth and outside), sharing knowledge
against private and hegemony of large informations channels ( open
data, contributive knowledge and connecting intelligence in front of
fights for rights for digitalization, creative commons in front of
copyrights and drm,…) How to invent relations in the global village
with the technologies of information of the 2.0 and soon 3.0 period ?
How to deal with « peace and war in the global village », which was
one of the books of McLuhan ? What is the opening space to applie our
responsability, or our friendship, that is not the privilege of
Facebook ?
