Re: [Yasmin_discussions] art*science 2017 - The New and History

Dear Pier Luigi and all Yasmin discussants,

I followed the discussion during the PC session and TTT Conference at Corfu.

What seems strange to me is why, since we are discussing about cultural heritage and art - science alliance, we consider them as separate. The fragmentation in knowledge happened after the 15th century and had been established in modern era, as knowledge economy. Before that, geometry, physics, astronomy, medicine, arts, rhetoric and philosophy consisted the body of knowledge which was indivisible.
Hence, if we go back, searching for this specific restore point, in where the holistic knowledge was the common process of learning, researching, creating and producing, we will find all the necessary elements for retrieving the ways that this knowledge can be activated in nowadays.

I did not want to talk about my work, because I thought that it may seem as a promotion, but since Pier Luigi referred to me, I will do it briefly, by focusing only to the key elements that lead to this kind of data recovery:

I am the third generation of fresco painters and I am working on finding ways to dislocate Byzantine art and philosophy to the recent technoetic environment. My doctoral thesis on Theoria, gave me the authorisation to move forward in translating the theoretical research in an art work.
Karoussos Chapel is a pneumatic structure - inflatable dome- which simulates a Byzantine Chapel in where the frescoes are projected in a 360 immersive environment. Through the rich narrative offered by various audiovisual layers , the enhanced visual experience brings new life to the art of monumental painting.
It is a fusion of past media (Byzantine) with the novelty of new media (moistmedia), i.e. the informative media that include both validated (monumental) and virtual (enhanced) reality.
These hybrid frescoes are using moistmedia to create the same organic reaction as this of the wet lime plaster in frescoes back in the 12th century. Through moistmedia though, the fresh layer of plaster is diffused through the emerging artwork and together with the light, embraces the spectators, achieving their absolute immersion, while they become a part of the fresco's virtuality.
Also, the parabolic 360 mirror projection, which is based on the conic sections of Apollonius, used later by Anthemius for the construction of Hagia Sofia's dome in Istanbul, revives the concept of science, as it was shaped in the Byzantine years, absolutely connected with astronomy, geometry and philosophy. Besides it highlights the Byzantine cosmopolitan aspect, since these treatises were collaborations with Arabs like Ibn al-Haytham, known as Alhazen.
The technology that uses validated and the virtual elements together with the parabolic geometry that uses both the concave and the convex of the curvature, has a non-Euclidean and a non-Cartesian topology.
Instead it is based on polar coordinates, Byzantine methodology, to generate a one-of-a-kind topological space with two-element set of Boolean operations. Hence, unlike the Cartesian system, which uses transformations such as translation, scale and rotation, this topology uses a Boolean-type model to perform operations such as union, intersection and subtraction.

I have outlined the most important points that present an amazing dislocation in terms of the convergence of old and new media, I was myself amazed with the similarity and the capacities that this dislocation has in our economy at large. I will stop now referring to my work so not to create any conflict of interest.

Hello Yasminers,

thank you all for making this discussion very interesting - I hope that more people, both among the invited respondents and among the Yasmin members, will be involved. I know that some of them are participating to the "Taboo - Transgression - Transcendence in Art & Science" conference, in Corfù, http://avarts.ionio.gr/ttt/

I'll go through all your posts - since May 15 until May 30 they are roughly 45! - and I'll try to make some kind of a digest on the many topics which have been raised. I'll post it later to Yasmin. Any help here is welcome :-)

My suggestion now is to get back to the original discussion topic, which is:

"Countries in the Mediterranean Rim, and more in general European countries, have a long history and heritage in art and culture, which can be shared and revamped through new disciplines, sciences and technologies. History and cultural heritage must go beyond the status of precious and extraordinary assets just considered in a logic of past preservation. They can be projected into the future fostering the "new", "innovation," promoting new projects and agreements, through arts, scientific disciplines and technologies. History and cultural heritage can become key elements from cultural, historical, social as well as economic viewpoints, they can act as observatories of issues which combine past, present and future, fostering new economic and professional areas."

I know that among our invited respondents and Yasmin members there are artists who have been or are working in this field, for instance the very interesting work of Katerina Karoussos in Greece. I think it would be important to know some more about what artists in the Mediterranean regions are making in connecting history to science and technology.

I am also thinking that, starting from this Yasmin discussion's topic, we could collect papers for a structured, formal and scientific publication that Yasmin could present as a survey/research on art/science issues in the Mediterranean rim. The eBook format (PDF, epub) would be perfect for this project. What do you think about? Is anybody interested in helping?

But now let's go back to the discussion again! I know it is just poor text, but despite all the right limitations you pointed out - language, structures, technology biases, and so on - it is anyway a medium which allows us to match, share and discuss different viewpoints, attitudes, activities, ideas, visions, cultures. ;-)

«If you give me a coin and I give you a coin, each of us has one coin. If you give me an idea and I give you an idea, each of us has two ideas» Silvio Ceccato (1914 - 1997).

Thank you all for participating!

Pier Luigi
