Re: [Yasmin_discussions] - ART, NEW MEDIA, AND SOCIAL MEMORY

Hi all, I'm new to the list so I hope you don't mind me suddenly chiming in
- but I can't help sharing that I run a lab called the Media Archaeology
Lab (http://mediaarchaeologylab.com) and I consistently have the most
fascinating and rewarding experiences letting students tinker on so-called
dead media of all kinds, especially typewriters (they'll get to the end of
the line, the carriage bell will ring, and they'll exclaim in terror and
excitment 'omg what do I do now?!') and teaching them BASIC on Apple II
computers. These primarily English majors might have a strange kind of
nostalgia for these foreign machines but they're fundamentally floored by
the capabilities of these machines and sometimes even floored that they can
actually program (sometimes, for the first time in their lives).

yours, Lori
