I have to mention on this topic of orality and new media the pioneering
thinking of Rudolf Arnheim who in
1935 wrote an important text on radio art Radio: The Art of Sound
(1936) ( Arheim
was a long time Leonardo editor and only recently died in 2007)
for one text on radio art see
http://cec.concordia.ca/econtact/Radiophonic/Radiocasting.htm
by Dan Lander
Doug Kahn;s book From Noise, Water, Meat: A History of Sound in the Arts
Cambridge, MA: MIT Press, 1999 is also relevant
i think its interesting to broaden the concept of 'orality' in digital media
to include the sound arts as well as narrative orality
