Yes, they *are* alternative worlds, the 3D MMORPG's and the metaverses already *are* alternative worlds. What we crave is entering these symbolic worlds, while the research is trying to involve more and more extended parts of our bodies and of the senses. I think David Cronenberg's "eXistenZ" perfectly outlines this tendence, and the problem of "reality" (from Philip K. Dick).
