Re: [Yasmin_discussions] Fwd: ARTISTS AS INVENTORS, art as invention

Dear Andy and Colleagues,

I think part of the reason the topic of artists as inventors very
quickly generated an astounding number of discussion posts and almost
as quickly slowed to a screeching halt was not simply due to the list
platform. I think the topic brings about such intense interest because
these two roles (artist and inventor) and/or the categories (art and
invention) are still very fluid in most societies, despite the ongoing
professionalization of the two areas. I think this is actually very
good news for us all. It allows participants to chose their own terms,
intentions, and conditions to a certain extent. Also, I like the idea
that I could potentially conceive of an interesting invention tomorrow
and that I could also potentially conceive of an equally interesting
artwork on another day. I do not need a government-issued license to
do so (some education [even self-education] wouldn't necessarily hurt,
because I think these expressions are part of an ongoing dialogue
[these statements might be snapshots, prototypes, and become artifacts
but at least initially they are more likely to be vital parts of a
dialogue, even if that dialogue is with one's self]). While I know
many of us feel the need to define terms, create glossaries, reference
legal definitions, it might be that one of the objectives of this
month's discussion could be to document and share more examples of
where the two areas of art and invention meet.

Best,

Robert
