I believe there is an important distinction between "making a
statement with a invention" and "making the artistic statement &
making the invention separately". In most cases science & technology
seems to be the day job for pre-1950's artists due to the lack of
financial model(for artistic works).
These days I see some very successful innovator-artists around, but
not the inventor ones. In this case artists follow the inventions and
make use of them in their art pieces.
Inventions are patented, innovations are protected(according to
business competition regulations). I agree with Annick. We have to
take creative commons into account.
