I didn't think very much about this interesting subject.
But, my first reaction would be to say:
"All good artists were and are always inventors."
Beethoven was a great inventor!
Kagel also!
Duchamp also!
Xenakis also!
Patent? Hummmmm!
Editions Salabert explores very well the patents (copyright) of Xenakis!
