7th Asia-Europe Art Camp
Call for Applications
Building on the series of the Asia-Europe Art Camp 2003-2008 programme,
which have tackled issues of contemporary art in Asia and Europe and New
Media Arts, ASEF will concentrate in this 7th Asia-Europe Art Camp on Visual
Arts and establish a partnership during 2009-2010 with the Art Workshop
Initiative of Casino Luxembourg.
This Art Camp will encourage a collaborative exchange between visual artists
extended on 2 continents for the years 2009-2010 bearing the name
"Asia-Europe Art Camp - Art Workshop For Visual Arts'. It is initiated in
Luxembourg and results in an exhibition in Shanghai during the World Expo
Shanghai 2010.
The collaborative Art Workshop between Shanghai and Luxembourg is meant to
encourage artistic exchanges between Asian and European artists and visual
arts experts on theoretical, artistic and human levels. It confronts
European and Asian artists to Chinese realities, Asian and European artists
to Luxembourg's realities.
The general theme of the 7th Asia-Europe Artcamp will be "Identities"
(working title) – changing identities, fake identities, multiple identities,
lost identities…In Luxembourg as well as in Shanghai, four artists or
theorists will join the group for a short period as guest lecturers. They
will give a public lecture on the relation between the theme and their
work/research, and will spend a couple of days with the participating
artists. During meetings in Shanghai and in the online conferences, the 3
workshop leaders and the coordinators of the art institutions will develop a
concept and define the theme more precisely.
The project will be implemented in three phases :
The first phase will consist of a 2-week in residency programme to be held
in Luxemburg in July 2009. The residency programme will be focused on
workshops, lectures, panel discussions as well as artistic and collaborative
project work. Artists will be selected through open application.
In the second phase an Online platform for exchange through a common blog /
website will be maintained during the period between the two Art Camp
residencies, where every artist will continue to work in their respective
countries and will be monitored by the facilitators.
For the third phase, the programme will travel to Shanghai. Some activities,
presentations, lectures and/or the final exhibition will take place at the
Luxembourg Pavilion at the World Expo 2010. Just before the launch of the
World Expo Shanghai 2010 the participants will be able to continue their
respective artworks collaboration during their second residence (4-18 July
2010) taking place in Shanghai where ASEF, Casino Luxembourg will
collaborate with a Chinese partner (to be identified).
The fact that the Art Workshop 2009-2010 takes place within the context of
the World Expo 2010 in Shanghai will encourage reflection about national
economic and cultural identities, representation etc. The different lectures
in Luxembourg as well as in Shanghai will be open to the local public and
will permit exchanges between local and international visitors and the
artists of the residency.
Deadline for applications: 28 January 2008.
