[Yasmin_discussions] Art and Atoms

Colleagues-

So...we have (at least) a few paths that we can go down. One is to think of
fusion/fission in the metaphorical sense. That is, the fusion of art and
technology or the fission, ala CP Snow, of academic pursuits into their
respective silos (another nuclear term, I suppose). And we also have the
actual art, broadly speaking, that one might find connected with these areas
of science and technology. Each of these is intriguing in its own way and I
look forward to hearing more.

That having been said, I can say that there has been an interesting body of
photographic art produced as documentation of the various Manhattan Project
facilities. I have to think that all the various nuclear complexes (UK,
France, etc.) have similar "stories" to tell. I am also thinking that in the
Atomic Age class I teach, one of the things we do is to consider the
iconography of civil defense posters from the 1950s and 1960s...if we
approach these as art historians, what do they say about the society that
produced them?
