Sous son allure de titre de film Z, ce que suggère cet intitulé est à la fois simple et placé sous le sceau du mystère de ce qui s'appelle une technique. S'y déclare d'abord un rapport privilégié entre cinéma et Histoire. Ce rapport n'est ni de subordination, ni d'illustration. Comme l'ont mis exemplairement en œuvre les grands cinéastes épiques américains ou soviétiques du début du cinéma, comme l'avait pressenti Benjamin ou d'autres écrivains et penseurs de la même période, cette technique inaugure une nouvelle ère de la représentation de l'Histoire. Autrement dit, il faut le souligner, une nouvelle époque de l'Histoire elle-même. Celle-ci n'est plus cette matière inerte qu'il faut parcourir en tâchant de l'agiter comme un pantin obéissant ou qu'il faut déchiffrer comme des archives illisibles : l'Histoire n'y est plus seulement ni un sujet, ni un cadre. Le cinéma présente une surface d'accueil à même d'imprimer l'Histoire sous la forme de son retour. Retour autre, bien entendu, tout autre, il ne s'agit pas de frauduleuses reconstitutions, mais fort de son mouvement, de son emportement, de son caractère contrarié : ainsi sont les spectres de l'Histoire. C'est-à-dire à la fois l'Histoire comme spectre protéiforme (on se souvient du fameux mot de Marx longuement commenté par Derrida), et à la fois les spectres que l'Histoire suscite.
Despite this Z film-like title, what this programme heading suggests is both simple and yet marked with the seal of a mystery called technique. It points first of all to a special relationship between the cinema and History; a relationship which is neither subordination nor illustration. As the great epic American or Soviet film-makers of the early cinema have so illustriously shown in their productions, and as foreshadowed by Benjamin or other writers and thinkers of that same period, this technique heralds a new era in the representation of History. In other words, it is without doubt a new era in History itself. This History is no longer inert material to be gone through and shaken like an obedient puppet or to be deciphered like illegible archives. History is now no longer just a subject or a framework. The cinema offers a captive area that is capable of making History in the form of its return. A return that has nothing to do of course with fraudulent reconstitutions – far from it – but is born along by its own movement, its own surge of energy, its own inherent struggles: these are the phantoms of History. That is to say, both History seen as a protean spectre (remember Marx's famous saying commented on at length by Derrida), and at the same time the spectres summoned by History.
