The idea of evolution towards either cyber-human or robot is depicted in a
diagram I put together some time ago for a design ideation tool called
This diagram shows the framework of Cyb-Erg. It is based on the notion that
artifacts are designed as extensions of human physical and mental functions.
The left half is concerned with physical tool evolution and the right half
mental tools. There is point when 'power' is added in the system at the line
of 'automation' and one of two directions can be taken - towards 'robot' or
'supertool', or in other words human-displacement or human-enhancement. Any
artifact can be placed at a certain stage of evolution and questions are
then asked about possible advancement up the Cyb-erg framework to give new
functional capabilities to a tool/product.
Generally 'human labour' is replaced by 'capital equipment' so the route
often taken in towards 'robot' on economic grounds, but if activities to be
displaced or enhanced are selected on more social and cultural grounds then
'cyber-human' systems are more likely to result.
This is quite an intuitive tool where incremental stages were not developed
rigorously but I find it of use in generating alternatives during designing.
